All in all, it was an idyllic place.

A warm breeze came in from the water, rustling the crystal-like drops on the trees ringing the beach, making a tinkling sound not unlike windchimes on Earth.

“Your home world is beautiful,” I murmured, turning my head to kiss Lumi’s hair.

He sighed and nodded. “It is, but so is yours.”

I smiled and ran a hand up and down his side.

Part of me was screaming that it was all so surreal. I—some random army mechanic—was on an alien planet with my alien mate against me. It was something so far outside my life’s expectations as to be absurd.

Then there was the reality. I’d taken a chance when my only safeguard was trust. Many men wouldn’t have gone through the process… most didn’t even start it. But part of me believed that this was worth that chance, and my trust had been rewarded.

“Will your family be here soon?” I asked, breathing Lumi’s scent deep.

I loved the way he smelled.

“They will. I informed them that we would be on the beach.”

“Ok.” I paused. “You’re sure they’ll be ok with me? They probably never expected their son to have to go to another world to find a mate.”

He shifted until he was perched on an elbow, looking down at me. He cupped my jaw with his free hand.

“They were proud of me when I volunteered to go. They have expressed excitement about meeting you. I do not doubt that they will accept you warmly.”

I tugged him down and claimed his lips in a kiss. “I love you, my Lumi.”

 “I love you too.”

I leaned my head back and stared at the sky. “I guess I’m more nervous than I should be… because my parents wouldn’t be supportive. Even if I were allowed to tell them, they’d be angry. They can pretend that I’m not gay when I’m single, but if I ever brought another man home…” I sighed. “They’d lose their shit.”

I wrapped my arms tightly around him and looked at him again. “Shit like that stays with a man.”

He kissed me gently. “It is strange to me that they are openly against your happiness.”

 “It’s far too common.”

He smiled. “Not here. Not that I have heard of.”

I returned his smile and pecked his lips. “I’m glad our babies will grow up with the support I didn’t have.”

 “Lumi!” called an unfamiliar voice.

We both looked up to see a couple walking hand in hand down the beach toward us. One man was sky blue, the other a light magenta. Both wore huge smiles and the loose linen-type clothing that everybody on Lyll seemed to wear.

Lumi scrambled off me and to his feet, then he rushed to the men for a group hug.

I got up more slowly, brushed the green sand off, and strolled over as the other men fussed over my mate and his tiny baby bump.

I’d no more than stopped beside them when the magenta one pulled me into a hug.

“Welcome to the family,” he said. “Thank you for making our Lumi so happy.”

My breath caught in my throat as I returned the hug. I hadn’t even been properly introduced, but the way he spoke and his body language proved that they already accepted me unconditionally.

 ???

I stood outside the small cafe in the pre-dawn light, arms wrapped around Lumi and resting on his seven-month baby bump as we both stared at the building.
