“Because I always mess up,” I sighed, closing my eyes and resting my head against his chest. “I dropped a stack of folders just yesterday, and had to spend an hour getting everything properly sorted again.”
“Oh, Bug…” He ran his hand up and down my back.
I sniffled. “I don’t know why I’m so upset. I knew I had no chance before I walked in.”
“You say that, but you probably really wanted that job.”
“Why do you say that?” I huffed.
He chuckled. “Because I know you. You only get upset like this when you want something. If you didn’t, you’d be here telling me that it was a waste of time instead.”
“Asshole,” I muttered.
“Or maybe you’re just getting close to your heat,” he teased. “You stink like alpha—probably from the interview. Is that what’s making you emotional?”
“Fuck you!”
“Ew! No!”
I struggled half-heartedly for a moment, but Owen secured his grip until I settled again.
“What’s the plan now?” he asked softly.
“Keep looking, I guess…”
“Then you’ll be ok.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that the right job for you is out there somewhere, and as long as you keep looking, eventually you’ll find it.”
I let out a long sigh but didn’t have the heart to argue. Maybe it worked like that for others, but not for me.

Jace—another cousin—drizzled more syrup than usual over his stack of pancakes—enough that my teeth started to hurt just thinking about the amount of sugar. Finally, he set the bottle to the side and picked up his silverware.
“You’re going to crash in a matter of hours,” I said, shaking my head.
He snorted. “Maybe, but it’s Saturday. I can just go home and take a nap.”
“You sure that’s safe?” I teased. “You might wake up with one of your mates’ dick inside you.”
He laughed. “That sounds like a bonus.”
I shook my head. “I still don’t know how you managed it. From single to four alphas in the blink of an eye.”
“I’m still surprised by that myself most days,” he admitted, then paused. “But while we’re on the subject…”
“Is this a ‘please be in my wedding party’ brunch?” I asked.
He chuckled and shook his head. “Not quite, not yet anyway. But I do have something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Oh?”
He nodded and licked his lips. “I… um…” He took a deep breath. “You probably already assumed this, but… I’m pregnant.”
I blinked, unsure I’d heard him correctly. “Pregnant?”
