“Everybody does, from time to time,” he murmured, eyes softening. “It’s how we deal with it that matters.”
I closed my eyes and leaned into his touch.
“You’re a good man, Ryan,” Linden murmured as his thumb continued to brush back and forth along my cheek. “Smart and far more capable than you give yourself credit for.”
I shook my head into his palm, a single tear escaping and rolling down the other cheek.
“You are though,” he protested. “Do you want to know why I was upset all week?”
I opened my eyes and looked up at him, wondering what he meant.
His thumb stilled but he kept his hand on my face. “I’ve…” he paused and motioned to the others. “We’ve… all been interested in you since you started. Romantically,” he clarified. “But none of us knew how to approach you about it. We thought we saw interest from you, but you’re so shy we could never be sure…”
He took a deep breath. “Then we saw you, cuddled up to that man while we were heading to Brendan’s parents’ house. You’d never talked about having an alpha, so I thought we had time to figure things out. But seeing you there, with him…”
He knelt in front of me so that he was looking up at me, rather than the other way around. “I thought we’d missed our chance—that the sweet omega I’d been pining over since the day you started, was out of reach.”
Another tear slipped out, and he brushed it away with his thumb.
“We thought we were complete—the four of us,” he murmured as his other hand took one of mine and squeezed it. “Then we met you, and we all wanted just a little more… with you. When I thought you were with somebody else, I was mad at myself. I was angry. If I’d only had the confidence to talk to you earlier, then maybe…”
He paused and shook his head. “Even today, after Brendan told me that he’s your cousin, I was scared. Because even if you don’t believe in yourself, you are an incredible man and any alpha would be lucky to have you. I thought we just had gained more time, but would soon face the possibility of you catching another alphas’s eyes. Then you asked me to share those desserts.”
He smiled as I let out a wet laugh.
“Your blush was adorable,” he said. “You were nervous, but I saw it then, in your eyes. You were flirting.”
He took a deep breath, held it for several seconds, then let it out slowly. “We want you, all four of us. As our assistant… because we know you can do it. But we want you as our omega too, if you’ll have us.”
I let out a shocked laugh.
“Your job is safe, whether you want to be our omega or not,” Zane stated. “However, if you are interested, we come as a package deal. The four of us have been involved romantically for years and none of us are interested in ending things for only one to pursue you.”
I couldn’t control myself as I started laughing—wondering if it was all real.
“What’s so funny?” Linden murmured, scooting a bit closer.
I sniffled as I tried to wrangle my emotions. “Do you want to know why I was outside with my cousin?”
Linden nodded. “Sure.”
“Because I was jealous. One of my other cousins took four alpha mates several months ago, and I was there for his baby shower. I wanted that for myself… with the four of you.”
Time stalled again as the words hung in the air.
Linden smiled as his thumb brushed across my cheek again. “May I kiss you, omega?”
I exhaled and nodded.
He rose on his knees, hand sliding from my jaw to my neck. He cradled the back of my head as his breath fanned across my face.
My eyelids fluttered shut only a second before his lips brushed across mine, tentative, gentle.
“Was that ok?” he whispered, still close enough for me to feel his heat against my skin.
“Mm-hmm.”
“May I do it again?”
