“Thank you,” I muttered.
“Alicia home?”
“No. She went to Denver for a concert.”
“Hawaiian it is.”
“You’re the best.”
He snorted. “At least you think so. You have soda, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Cool. I’ll put in an order and text you when I know about how long it’ll be.”
“Ok.”
There were a few seconds of silence, then, “Bug?”
“Yeah?”
“You’re more capable than you give yourself credit for. Take a chance on this job. I could tell you wanted it. They hired you. That means they saw something in you that’s worthy of the position. Don’t count yourself out now.”
“I wish I could do that, O.”
He let out a long breath. “Want me to cook dinner for you tomorrow?”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
“I’d like that.”
“See you tomorrow then. Have a good second day at work, ok?”
“I’ll try.”
“Love ya, Bug.”
“Love you too. See you tomorrow.”
I watched the screen go dark, then sighed. My life was a mess, but at least I had Owen. Until he found himself an omega anyway.
Chapter 4
~April~
Iscanned the transcript of a recent meeting, compared it to my minutes, then put both text files and the audio recording into a file on the company server.
It had been nearly a month since I’d started, and I—somehow—hadn’t been fired for incompetence yet. I’d expected to be shown the door the entire week Darlene had trained me, and doubly so the following week when she was no longer there as a buffer. Yet everybody seemed to have moved on as if it was business as usual.
I’d known my termination was impending when I handed Mr. C de Baca the wrong financial statement the morning before a big meeting. But he’d merely laughed and told me it was fine when I barged into his office a few minutes before the meeting started, correct report in hand.
My stomach had flip-flopped for hours when I’d accidentally ordered too much catering for a meeting. But Mr. Wallace had shrugged it off and told me to let the employees have some once the meeting was over.
Every mistake had been met with nonchalance, or gentle redirection to prevent it happening again—which was worse than if they’d gotten upset. Were they angry at me? Did they regret hiring me?
Did they pity me?
