She stopped in the entry and gave me a long stare, eyes flicking to my flat stomach and back to my face.

I scowled and crossed my arms. Unfortunately, that only seemed to encourage her need to see every omega around knocked up.

“I’m just saying,” she said, putting false innocence in her tone. “Jace managed to land four alphas, surely you can get one.”

I couldn’t take it, not then. I huffed, and, before I knew it, I was on my feet, stomping towards the front door and away from my meddling aunt.

Sunlight nearly blinded me as I stepped outside, and I realized what a stupid move it had been. It wasn’t as if I could leave Jace in the middle of his party, no matter how much I didn’t want to be around Aunt Sharon. But going in again so soon felt like admitting defeat.

For a moment I considered going through the side gate and to the backyard where the alphas were grilling. But I needed a few minutes to myself.

I glanced around, but Uncle Eli’s house only had a stoop, not a porch. I reached down, but as soon as I touched the step I knew the concrete would burn me if I sat for more than a minute. With no other option, I sighed and moved to sit on the grass, pulling my knees to my chest and wrapping my arms around them.

I stared out at the quiet residential street. The neighborhood was older but well-loved. I remembered playing there when we were kids, and there were other kids around. Now the area was mostly middle-aged couples and older—people who welcomed grandkids for the occasional visit rather than having to honk and break up street hockey or basketball games.

The door opened behind me, and I didn’t need to turn to see who it was. Footsteps across the grass, then Owen’s familiar scent as he took a seat next to me.

 “You ok, Bug?”

 “No.”

“Wanna talk about it? Mama doesn’t normally get under your skin quite so bad.”

I leaned against him, but he pulled me onto his lap just as a black sedan with tinted windows rolled past.

I relaxed, some of the tension melting away.

Owen would always protect me. I might never find an alpha of my own, but I knew he’d be there whenever I needed him.

“It’s just a bunch of stupid crushes,” I whispered. “But my brain tells me that I’m in love with my bosses. I know they don’t feel the same way though. I guess seeing Jace happy, then your mom…”

 “You’re jealous.”

I nodded against his chest. “Is it so wrong to want that for myself?”

 “Of course not.”

I sniffled. “What’s wrong with me? I can’t find an alpha, so I fall for my bosses instead?”

“Nothing’s wrong, Bug. You’ve told me about them, and they all seem like good men. It shows you have good taste in potential mates.”

I snorted. “Impossible taste is more like it. What would any man like that find appealing in a man like me?”

“What wouldn’t they find appealing?” he countered. “You’re kind and gentle. You’re smart, even though you don’t like to admit it. I’m not gonna comment on your looks, cause that would be creepy, but I’ve seen other alphas turn for a second glance. You can even be funny sometimes.”

 “Ass,” I sighed.

He tightened his hold on me, and I let out a long sigh.

“Are you still looking for delivery drivers?” I asked after a couple of minutes.

“Always, but I won’t hire you this time.”

My head jerked up. “What? Why?”

“Because I want you to stay at this job.”

“I just told you I’m in love with my bosses.”
