“Are you sure?”

 “I insist.”

Just then the elevator dinged, and a heavenly scent wafted out.

“Oops! Looks like they’re here,” Linden laughed. “Go. Keep Alonzo distracted. I’ll call main reception in a minute.”

I nodded, grabbed my tablet, and rushed to Alonzo’s office—willing my suddenly-rumbling stomach to settle and not give away the surprise.

 Chapter 5

 ~May~

Ibalanced several binders on one arm while opening the door with the other.

“Afternoon Alonzo,” I said as I walked in. “Here are those reports you needed.”

“Great! Just set them on the desk.”

I started towards his desk, but my foot caught on the edge of a rug, and I promptly went tumbling. The binders flew from my grasp, and, as I lay there in embarrassment, loose paper floated down around me.

“Oh my god!” Alonzo rushed over. “Are you ok?”

I got to my knees and started to frantically pick up the loose papers. Then I noticed that easily three of the binders had opened when I fell, and I had no idea which page belonged to which report.

“I’m so sorry,” I babbled, trying not to cry from embarrassment. “I’ll… I’ll get them fixed.”

I grabbed at the pages, collecting them as quickly as I could. Then I noticed Alonzo kneeling in front of me. He grabbed my hands, forcing me to stop.

“Hey,” he said softly. “Look at me.”

I glanced up and saw concern in his warm brown eyes.

“Are you ok?” he repeated. “You’re not hurt, are you?

I shook my head. “Only my pride.”

He blew out a breath. “Good. I’d hate it if you were hurt.”

I tried to retrieve my hands so that I could continue cleaning up, but he tightened his hold.

“It’s ok. Give yourself a minute.”

 “I need to fix these…” I argued.

He shook his head. “They can wait.”

 “But…”

His thumbs bumped over my knuckles. “Take a minute. They aren’t going anywhere, and I’m more worried about you.”

 “I’m sorry…” I whispered.

He shook his head. “You’re fine. Accidents happen.”

 “I’m just a klutz,” I argued.

He chuckled. “I know what that feels like.”
