“Did they tell you when they’d know?”

I nodded. “Monday. They promised to let me know either way.”

He pointed his fork at me, a strand of syrup connecting it to the stack of pancakes. “At least they won’t ghost you.”

“I don’t know if that helps…”

“Did they give you a time?” Owen asked as I paced his room.

I shook my head, and almost tripped over the edge of his rug. I sighed as I paused to regain my balance. “Do you need to go soon?”

“I have a few more minutes. The lead day waitress agreed to stay on a bit longer so I could have a break before going in to cover for the night manager.”

“Sorry if I’m not letting you relax,” I sighed, walking over to sit on his lap.

He wrapped one arm around my waist. “You’re fine.”

“Did I tell you that Jace is pregnant?”

He chuckled. “Yes, when you were over yesterday.”

“Sorry for repeating things.”

He rubbed his hand up and down my back. “You’re fine.”

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, then met his gaze. “I wish they’d call. Rip off the bandage so I can move on.”

“I’ve never seen you want a job so badly,” he murmured. “Promise you’ll be ok if I have to go to work before you get the call?”

I swallowed, then nodded. “I’ll be fine. Alicia will be there by the time I get home, or I can probably monopolize Jace for a bit.”

He pulled me into a hug, and I sighed as I relaxed into it, closing my eyes again. “You’re strong, Bug. Never forget that.”

I snorted.

“You are. You might not believe it, but I know the truth. You’re far stronger than you give yourself credit for.”

“Thank you.”

I jumped when my phone rang, but Owen held me tight and reached over to where I’d dropped it on the couch.

“Thank you,” I murmured when he handed it over. Then I accepted the call. “Hello?”

“Mr. Lewis?” A voice I recognized as Darlene asked.

“Speaking.”

“This is Darlene from Techspeed. Is now a good time?”

“It is.”

There was a brief pause, but I could hear the smile in her voice when she spoke again. “Congratulations Mr. Lewis. The team was impressed with your resume and interview, and would like to extend an offer.”

I promptly slipped off Owen’s lap and landed on the floor with a thud. “I… I got the job?”

She chuckled. “You did. I’ll be emailing over the details of the offer soon. Please review and send either an acceptance or refusal in the next couple of days.”
