He frowned. “Have you found a house already?”

I shook my head. “I haven’t even really had a chance to start looking.”

He hummed and ran a hand through his hair. “Honestly? Forty-five days would be pushing it, even if you put in an offer today. If you haven’t found a place yet…”

I groaned and leaned back to stare at the sky again. “I know…”

The sound of something bouncing along the ground, and I looked to see him dragging over a lawn chair.

Derrick took a seat and nodded. “Ok… Time to think of other options.”

 “Huh?”

He smiled. “Just because the normal route won’t work, doesn’t mean we can’t get you moved.”

Something fluttered in my chest. He’d only just met me, but already seemed eager to help.

 Chapter 2

 ~July~

“How goes the house hunt?” Ryan asked before taking a bite of pancakes.

I sighed and took a bite of my burger to avoid the question.

 “That good, huh?”

I blew out a long breath. “I thought closing quickly would be the biggest problem. Turns out that finding a place I like for the amount I’ve been approved for is the harder part.”

 “Wanting a McMansion or something?”

I snorted. “Nothing like that. Two or three bedroom, two bath. Decent kitchen. You know: the basics.”

 “Gotta have a good kitchen.”

I nodded. “Especially as much as I cook.”

He laughed. “I’m glad I didn’t inherit that gene.”

I grinned. “It has its ups and downs.”

“One of the downs being food costs.”

I picked up a french fry and pointed at him. “That is one.” I took a bite, then continued. “So… baby shower. Have you looked at the registry yet?”

He shook his head. “Hell no. I’m still trying to pretend that I have more time.”

“Wanna go in on something together so we don’t just each show up with some diapers and onesies?”

 “Works for me. Whatcha thinking?”

“Anna has a lovely diaper bag set on the registry. It has the bag, changing mat, several matching accessory baggies, and bottles. It’s more than I want to spend myself, but I think it’s perfect for us to split.”

“Sounds good. Text me a link so I can see it?”

 “Sure thing.”

“Unless you wanted to go by the store and check it out in person,” he suggested.
