The sound of multiple feet coming down the stairs signaled the exit of the team. I watched as most of them headed straight to the door. Shane, however, walked over to where I sat.

“Hey Ash,” he said. “Tyler asked me to tell you that they’re just cleaning up the room and will be a few more minutes. Is that ok?”

“Yeah… sure.”

“Thanks man.” He smiled. “Hope to see you and Jace at the post-season party.”

“Party?”

“Oh, I guess Nate didn’t tell you yet. I’ll text him to remind him to give you the deets. You and Jace are definitely invited.”

“Oh… thanks.”

He smiled. “Have a nice evening.”

Of all the teammates who could have told me that Tyler and a few more would be a bit longer, it was probably best that they sent Shane. He was one I would have felt guilty about going home with, since Jace was clearly interested in the alpha.

I waited a few more minutes, then locked the doors to prevent anybody from coming in.

Lucas finished checking in a few returns, glanced at his watch, then stared at the stairs. “Want me to tell them to go?”

“You have plans?”

He blushed. “Late date.”

“Go on,” I said. “You don’t need to wait.”

“I’d be more comfortable if I could walk you to your car.”

“I’ll be fine.”

He crossed his arms and shook his head.

I sighed. “I’ll ask one of the guys to walk me out. Ok?”

“The same alphas Jace was so worried about you going home with?”

“The same ones.”

Lucas’s eyes narrowed, then he jumped and pulled his phone free. He glanced at the screen and sighed.

“Don’t keep your date waiting. I’ll walk around and turn off lights while I wait for the guys. I feel safe around them. Ok?”

He studied me for a minute. “See you next week.”

I nodded. “Enjoy your date.”

We walked to the doors, where I let Lucas out, then I walked the main floor, dimming the lights. The second floor was next, and finally the third.

However, the guys were still in the study room, even after all my other closing tasks were done.

I stood outside the AV study room for several seconds, staring at the door. They’d never run so late when leaving, plus I wasn’t in the mood to face more rejection.

Staying had been a bad idea. The rational part of me had always known that I never had a chance with any of the men on the team, but my omega side had seen them as potential mates.

I squeezed my eyes shut, took a deep breath, then opened them again.

“Guys?” I called out as I knocked on the door. “We’ve been closed for a while now.”
