Shane grinned. “The coaster? It was fantastic. One hundred percent recommend going once they open for the summer.”

Jace smiled in a way I only saw when he was intrigued. I nudged his leg under the table, and received a light kick in response.

Oh, he was definitely interested.

I soon learned that Garrett owned a small western-wear shop, besides leading his birding tours. Miguel was the manager of an auto parts store, and the rest of the men on the team had an assortment of rather ordinary jobs… considering their good looks.

Ipushed the cart through the stacks, shelving books and listening to the murmur of study groups coming from almost all the tables.

Finals week had descended upon the school, and each student was intent on eking out as many points as possible from exams and projects. Textbooks, notepads and laptops had become staple decor in the waning days of the semester, filling every available flat surface.

I turned a corner and stopped when I spotted a familiar head of sun-kissed skin and dark brown hair sitting in one of our reading areas.

“Miguel?” I teased. “Forget what day it is? The team meeting isn’t for another two days.”

He glanced up, then sheepishly held up a magazine. “Your selection is good. I subscribe to a couple auto mags, but you’ve got several that would be splurges for me. So I’ve been coming over to read more.”

I chuckled, walked over and took a seat next to him, glad that the chair was available. “I don’t think I’ve seen you outside of team days. How long have you been coming?”

He blushed. “A few weeks. I think you’ve been busy at the desk every other time.”

“You could have said hi.”

He shrugged. “I didn’t want to interrupt.” He then motioned around. “Why’s it so busy today?”

I laughed. “Finals week.”

“Oh…” he scratched the back of his neck. “I guess I assumed it would be a bit later.”

I shook my head. “Finals have always been early in the month.”

“I wouldn’t know…” he sighed. “I… um… I went to work right after high school…”

I blinked. “And?”

He tilted his head to one side. “And what?”

I shook my head. “You seemed a bit unsure about saying that, so I thought there was more.”

“Isn’t that enough?”

“What do you mean?”

He was silent for a moment, then blew out a long breath. “It’s just that I don’t have a fancy degree”

“Do you feel like not going to college is holding you back?”

“Huh?”

“You manage an auto parts store, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Is that what you want to do?”
