He burst into laughter. “Oh, you’re adorable.”

A blush crossed my face as the rest of the team laughed alongside him.

“Congratulations!” Jace declared, holding up a pint of beer. “Great game!”

“Are you a fan of lacrosse?” Nate asked.

“Not a bit,” Jace admitted. “But I’m always a fan of celebrating with men who are buying my beer.”

Laughter from around the long table.

“Another round,” Tyler said, holding up his beer as a waitress came around.

She nodded and hustled towards the bar.

“Thanks for coming,” Tyler said, looking over at Jace and I. “Even if you don’t know the game, we’re happy you were there.”

“Hear, hear!” Garrett cheered. “Everybody liked seein’ our favorite librarians there.”

“Aw, I’m a favorite too?” Jace teased.

“Yes, because you’re with Ash.”

“I’ll take it.” Jace grinned, then he looked around. “Where are those onion rings?”

“Dude, do you ever stop eating?” called out another team member, Miguel.

“Nope,” he laughed.

“Where does it go?”

“Hell if I know!”

The table burst into laughter.

“So this is a recreational league, right?” Jace asked. “What do you all do for a living?”

Tyler laughed. “We’re all fairly normal people off the field. I’m a sales rep for a food distributor.”

“Car salesman,” Nate replied.

“You sell cars?” Jace asked.

Nate laughed. “I know, right? But I like the work, and I found a place that doesn’t ask their people to use all those pushy sales tactics. It means I can connect with my customers and put them in the right car for their needs, rather than the one that makes the boss the most money.”

Jace laughed. “I meant that I was surprised you did anything inside. You’ve always got so much energy I would have thought you were a ski instructor and did kayaking during the summer.”

One of the quieter members of the team—Shane—raised his hand at the far end of the table. “That would be me… the skier slash kayaker.”

“You?” Jace asked, eyes wide. “I would have pegged you as somebody running a small antique store or something.”

Shane laughed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Naw. I’m an adrenaline junkie through and through.”

“You went parachuting what… three times last year?” Tyler asked.

Shane nodded. “That… Ziplining twice... I also went to the opening of that new mountain coaster up near Mountain Springs.”

“Was that fun?” I asked.
