“I’m worried you won’t make it home…”

I sighed and rested my hands on Jace’s shoulders. “Listen, nothing will happen that I don’t want. Ok? I’ve had fantasies about these men for months. If one of them wants to take me home, I’ll go quite happily.”

“That’s your heat talking.”

I shook my head. “No, it’s not. You know me. When have I ever gotten so heat-addled that I’d let my instincts take over?”

“Never…”

“Then you know I’m ok.”

“But…”

“I promise I’ll call for relief if I feel like my heat is coming on too quickly.”

He sighed, then glanced over my shoulder. “Lucas?”

“Yeah?” the younger man asked, walking over.

“Do me a favor and keep an eye on Ash tonight.”

Lucas studied me for a few seconds, then scrunched his nose. “Damn… I would have called in.”

Jace nodded. “I agree, but he’s insistent on working. He’s promised to call if it gets too bad, but I want you to use your judgment as well. If he starts showing more symptoms, then I want you to contact me.”

“You got it.”

Jace studied us both, then stepped back. He was silent for several seconds before his eyes locked with mine.

“Just this once, Ash. I’m not going to let you make a habit of working so close to your heat.”

“Ok.”

Jace shook his head. “Don’t blame me if you end up pregnant.”

“They’ve had plenty of time to make a move if any of them were interested.”

He snorted. “Enjoy your morning sickness.”

“You owe me chocolate on Monday when I’m complaining about my heat being miserable without a real knot.”

“You owe me a trip to that new cupcake shop—and one of every flavor—when come Monday you’re bragging about one of their knots helping you through your heat.”

“Bet.”

“Better save up, those cupcakes aren’t cheap.”

“Luxury chocolate,” I specified.

Jace looked about to say something else, but let out an undignified ‘oof’ when Lucas walked up behind him and pushed him out of the circulation area.

“Go home,” Lucas said. “I don’t want to hear you two bicker about knots, heats, and treats all night.”

“That’s right,” Jace said. “You asked for next weekend off.”

“Yeah. So don’t get me started, I’m already fighting all the cravings.”

“Ok, I’m going,” Jace replied.
