Kaleb closed his eyes and took a deep breath, turning in an attempt to follow his alpha’s scent.
“I’m gonna have to mingle,” he finally replied, opening his eyes again and looking at me.
I grinned. “You know what this means, right?”
“Hmm?”
“At least one of us is getting a knot.”
He burst into laughter. “Ass.”
“Yep. That’s the preferred place for them.” I forced myself not to squirm with my own need at my pun. My best friend needed me to help him find his mate, and I was going to be the best wingman I could.
He shook his head. “I guess you were right about two cars.”
“You’re welcome,” I laughed.
He grinned, then looked around again. “Ok. I need to find him, but not be an ass while mingling either.”
“Good luck. Think he’ll be looking for you too?”
“Dunno. Hope so.”
“Want me to do anything in particular?”
He set his hands on my shoulders and met my gaze. “Play interference. If I’m not blatantly flirting, keep the oblivious ones off me.”
“Got it.”
“You’re the best.” He gave me a quick hug then turned to look at the crowd again.
I followed as Kaleb started back towards the entrance, and decided that it was probably a good plan. The scent had hit him after we’d been in there for some time, which meant his mate had probably been a recent arrival.
Worry started to curl through me. I didn’t know if Kaleb felt it through his all-consuming search for his mate, but his heat scent was getting stronger by the second and random alphas were starting to notice.
A handsome alpha with blond hair and green eyes was the first to make a move, and the revulsion on Kaleb’s face was enough to tell me that I needed to get the other man away from him as quickly as possible.
I managed to deflect the alpha by telling him that Kaleb was looking for his boyfriend—which was true in a way—but that I’d be willing to chat him up later, which the man seemed satisfied with.
I’d just managed to deflect him for a few minutes when Kaleb froze, eyes pinned on a particular person.
He also seemed to have lost the ability to breathe.
“Breathe Kay,” I said. “Which one is he?”
“The genie,” he whispered.
I looked over and spotted the man as part of a throuple. He was in a blue and gold costume with a ridiculous looking bald cap and beard. “He’s cute. A bit of an odd hairstyle though.”
“I think it’s the costume,” Kaleb snickered.
“Hope so,” I laughed. “But who’s that couple he’s with? Think they’re a thing?”
Kaleb shook his head. “The omega is the man who asked me to paint the city hall windows, the other alpha is his mate. They didn’t mention a third, so I think that’s a friend roped into the costume.”
“Got it. So you going in?”
He licked my lips, but didn’t make a move. “Not yet.”
