He laughed. “Fine, no thanks to you.”

“Say hello for me, and tell her I killed her off again.”

“Can do.”

“So besides arguing with the dead relative escape, what else was wrong about this one?”

“Shall I start with the ex-bashing, or the blatant sexism.”

“Oof. Sorry Justin.”

I shook my head. “What can I say? I’m just doomed to date all the worst alphas.”

“You’ll find a good one eventually.”

I snorted. “Maybe if I switch to female alphas. But…”

He nodded. “Yeah. They’re pretty, but not my thing either.”

I sighed and plowed some chicken into my mouth.

“Well, you’re here,” Kaleb said. “We can spend some more time working on your costume.”

“Works for me.”

My luck with alphas sucked, but at least I had Kaleb.

Chapter 2 - Max

Istared at the boxes stacked next to the door. “Of course he’s late,” I grumbled. “God forbid he break that trend now. Especially since he isn’t putting on an act.”

I shook my head, then tucked a lock of my long brown hair back behind my ear. How had it taken me three years to realize just how much of a fool I had been? The signs had been there, but I’d conveniently ignored them.

Three years with a man who had never really been interested in me, but in the idea of me. When the reality that I was a real person started to appear through the cracks of his perception… Well that was when the problems started.

I looked at the clock and sighed. “I should have just gone to work. He was never going to appreciate it anyway.”

That was the one good thing about Linden, despite how bad the past month had been as all the lies came out, he was just enough of an arrogant ass that I could trust he wouldn’t steal, even if left in our apartment alone.

Well, my apartment, now that he was moving in with the alpha he’d been seeing on the side.

But god forbid anybody accuse him of theft. Things like that were for lesser men. So every shared purchase had been decided on between us, even as I slept on the couch.

It was the strangest breakup I’d ever been through. Yet, oddly, the smoothest. Oh we’d had our fair share of blowup fights when I’d learned that he was cheating, but once it was clear that we were done, it became a matter of getting it over with as quickly and cleanly as possible.

That was, until it was time for Linden to actually move his stuff out. First there wasn’t room in the other guy’s place. And now?

“Probably got a knot in his ass,” I huffed, wondering if he was already cheating on the other guy.

Finally, nearly an hour and a half after our scheduled time, Linden texted that he was on his way. He arrived fifteen minutes later.

I helped him carry boxes to his new boyfriend’s SUV, while the other alpha looked on.

Apparently he’s not the helpful type,I thought to myself, watching as the other man lit up a cigarette and leaned on one of the decorative planters that made up the apartment complex’s landscaping.

It was strange that the new beau didn’t seem to want to help his omega at all, but Justin and I got it taken care of quickly enough, him taking the lighter boxes and me the larger or heavier ones. Within an hour we’d moved everything out of my apartment.

Seeing them drive away was a bittersweet moment. Part of me lamented the wasted years, but there was also a part that was relieved. I’d always kept a wrapper on my cock, and never been tempted to bite him either, so there were no attachments between us.
