“That doesn’t really answer the question.”

I ran a hand over my hair. “Unfortunately, it’s the only real answer I have. Most days I think I’m doing ok, then I remember that sense of betrayal and…” I spread my hands in a ‘what can you do’ kind of gesture.

“Well we’re here for you, if you need us.”

I smiled. “It is nice having you two back in town.”

“I’m just glad my fellowship offer came in before winter really hit,” Grace said with a soft smile. “I don’t know if I could have taken another Minnesota winter.”

I laughed. “I know I wouldn’t survive.” I turned to Annie. “Have you found a job here yet?”

She nodded. “I’ve got one lined up, just waiting for my licenses before I can start.”

“Will they take long?”

She shook her head. “I don’t think so. States communicate all the various information pretty well, and I expect it’ll come through within a couple weeks. Until then I can help set up the house and work on a nursery.”

Grace pouted. “She won’t let me do much.”

I smiled. “She’s just being careful. I’m sure the doctors have you under strict orders against lifting anything heavy.”

She huffed. “Yeah.”

I reached across the table and rested my hand on hers. “Just focus on your baby. It’s a pain now, but it’ll be worth it when you hold your little one in your arms.”

She smiled. “Yeah.”

I squeezed her fingers. “Good. And if you two need any help moving in, just let me know.”

“Will do,” Annie replied. Then she looked around. “Now where’s our waitress? I’ve been craving the enchiladas here for years and it’s time to get my fix.”

The omega who lived across from me in the other building was acting strange.

At first glance he was just taking in groceries from his car. But as I swept leaves from my tiny patio I saw just how odd it was.

He scurried, and that was never something I’d seen him doing before. Granted I hadn’t paid much attention, but maybe that was why I noticed.

He’d peek his head out, look around, dart to his car, grab as many bags as he could, then rush back inside. The process would repeat a moment later when it was time for another load.

He’d always seemed easygoing when I’d noticed him in the past, so it worried me.

But it was none of my business.

Still, I decided that there had to be a reason for his hurried movements. The weather was still mild enough that he wouldn’t have been trying to avoid the cold.

I frowned as he closed the trunk and disappeared inside the final time. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something seemed off.

I stared at his apartment door for several minutes, watching to see if he would come out again, or if he would open the blinds. But it seemed as if he wanted to appear not to be home at all.

It was weird, and something gnawed at my middle. But there wasn’t anything I could do either.

Chapter 7 - Justin

“Please tell me you’ve gone to the cops,” Dean said, eyeing me as I walked in.

I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. “Yes. I talked to them, but they said that there’s nothing they can do right now. Technically he hasn’t done anything illegal, so there’s nothing to charge him with.”
