“Not yet? Why the hell not?”
“Because he’s my mate, and I want something better than ‘Hi, take me to bed?’”
“But that’s such a straightforward greeting.”
“I think I can do better.”
“Hmmm…” I replied. Then I grinned. “I got it.”
“What?”
“He’s a genie, right? With a lamp?”
“Yeah?”
“And you’re a burglar.”
“Ok?”
“Come on,” I urged. “Get the hormones out of your head for two seconds and put the thoughts together. Aladdin was a…”
“Thief,” he replied.
I laughed. “Find a time when he’s alone, and go steal his heart.”
He echoed my laughter. “You’re such a dork.”
“But a dork with good ideas.”
“Yeah.”
Kaleb watched his alpha, but every second he didn’t make a move was one more that his heat-scent deepened. While he seemed oblivious, I was not. He was getting more attention than I was comfortable with, but I didn’t want to rush him either, so I deflected the potential suitors, lying, flirting, and doing whatever I could to ensure that my best friend would have the first-meeting he wanted.
I realized that Kaleb was waiting for his mate to be alone, and I could have cried with relief when I saw the man break off from the other two.
“I’m going in,” Kaleb informed me.
“Go get him.”.
He turned and hugged me. “Sorry to ditch you so early in the party.”
I shook my head. “I can’t think of a better reason to. Call me in a few days to catch up?”
One of his eyebrows went up in response.
I chuckled. “You smell like pre-heat. I figure you’re gonna be busy for a day or two.”
He smiled, stepped back, and gave me a tiny wave. Then he took a deep breath as he started towards his alpha.
“There he goes,” I muttered, moving to one wall where I could keep an eye on him, ready to step in if another alpha tried to get in his way. But he made it to his mate safely.
A hint of jealousy curled through me when I saw the alpha’s expression. Kaleb had always known that he had a fated mate, but the other man seemed surprised. However that didn’t stop the devotion from appearing on his face when they came face-to-face for the first time.
Kaleb whispered something to his mate, then they started kissing like they were the only two people in the room. A moment later they were headed towards the restrooms, both their pants already starting to tent.
“Lucky bastard,” I snickered. “And here I thought I was the one getting a knot tonight.”
Still, I was happy for him. Kaleb had finally found his alpha, and he deserved all the best things in life.
