He grinned. “Got it.”

 “You’re the best.”

I gave him a quick hug then turned to look at the crowd again.

The scent hadn’t been there when we first came in, which meant that my alpha had come in after us. Unfortunately that knowledge didn’t help much, since I hadn’t paid too much attention to the people around me at the time.

Still, closer to the door was at least a place to start. I made my way back along one wall until I was at that end of the room, then looked around again.

The scent seemed stronger, but that could have also been that he’d been there longer, so more had accumulated in the air. Every whiff of it caused my cock to want to harden.

Need tingled along my skin, and I was pretty sure that I’d be going into a surprise heat, but that knowledge only seemed to fuel my desire.

Colors and sounds dulled my senses, and what if he were wearing a mask? Would my instincts lead me to him the same way?

Would fate let us be so close and not push us together?

A gorgeous alpha with blond hair and green eyes tried flirting, but he wasn’t the man I was looking for, and I was grateful when Justin pulled me away a moment later.

I spotted Sean and Lowell in what appeared to be a throuple costume with another man, who was turned away from me, and I thought the idea was cute.

Then the man turned, and time stopped.

There he was, my alpha. Dressed as a genie to match the other two.

“Breathe Kay,” Justin said from beside me. “Which one is he?”

 “The genie,” I whispered.

He looked over. “He’s cute. A bit of an odd hairstyle though.”

 “I think it’s the costume,” I snickered.

“Hope so,” he laughed. “But who’s that couple he’s with? Think they’re a thing?”

I shook my head. “The omega is the man who asked me to paint the city hall windows, the other alpha is his mate. They didn’t mention a third, so I think that’s a friend roped into the costume.”

“Got it. So you going in?”

I licked my lips. Everything in me wanted to stride over and meet my mate.

But I wanted to make a first impression that didn’t scream ‘get a knot in me.’

 “Not yet.”

“Not yet?” Justin asked. “Why the hell not?”

“Because he’s my mate, and I want something better than ‘Hi, take me to bed?’”

“But that’s such a straightforward greeting.”

“I think I can do better.”

“Hmmm…” Justin replied as he mused. Then a grin crossed his face. “I got it.”

 “What?”

 “He’s a genie, right? With a lamp?”
