“First dance is yours,” she replied, holding out a hand.

I knew what she was doing. But we were there, and I wanted my best friend to have fun.

“One dance,” I replied, standing.

“That’s all I ask.”

I led her to a quiet area of the floor and allowed my feet to take over.

Chapter 6 - Eli

Amber perched herself on a stool next to the DJ station. “How’s it going?”

I grinned. “Good so far. Jackson hasn’t had to make any changes.”

“That’s fantastic!” She looked around. “Good turnout tonight too.”

Jackson leaned in. “Yep. Word seems to be spreading more each week. Somebody just needed to make a more welcoming spot to awaken the sleeping dance community here.”

“Speaking of which,” Amber interrupted, then she waved. “Kenzie!”

I turned and saw a familiar woman walking in with a man I didn’t recognize. She acknowledged Amber’s call with a small wave, but seemed focused on… her date?

I frowned. They didn’t seem to be on a date. There was something about his expression—like his presence was an obligation rather than a genuine desire to dance.

I watched as they took seats, and how reluctant he seemed when Kenzie asked him to dance. At first I thought maybe he didn’t know how, but that idea was quickly squashed when he comfortably settled into a jitterbug with her.

“He’s cute,” Amber said, noticing the way I stared.

I shrugged, though I could see why she’d say that. He had a slender frame and his head was topped with short dark hair. He wouldn’t be gracing the covers of magazines, but probably didn’t have any troubles finding dates.

“He can dance too,” Amber noted. “Maybe he’ll be a regular.”

“That would be nice,” Jackson added.

I nodded. “The more the merrier.”

“Exactly!” Jackson laughed, then grinned as he spotted somebody else. “Be back in a few, I just saw my man walk in and I need a dance.”

I chuckled and watched as Jackson sauntered over to where Mitch had paused in the door. They shared a kiss, then Mitch led Jackson to the dance floor with a hand on his lower back.

“They’re so sweet together,” Amber hummed. “I hope I find myself a man who treats me as well as Mitch treats Jackson.”

“You will.” I smiled. “Hard to believe that Mitch tried rejecting Jackson, isn’t it?”

“I know, right? Jackson told me about it, and I thought he was trying to play a joke on me,” Amber answered. “But Mitch backed him up.”

I watched the pair dance, slightly jealous that they had fallen in love so quickly and easily. It was the kind of romance that I wanted, but that seemed so elusive.

Amber draped her arms over my shoulder. “Want me to steal your phone and swipe right on a bunch of girls for you?”

“Hell no,” I replied, shrugging her off.

“Then stop staring at them like they’re everything you always wanted.”

I flipped her off, and Amber laughed. “We tried that, remember? Luckily we didn’t let one night of sloppy drunk-sex destroy our friendship.”

“Don’t remind me,” I groaned.
