She gave me one more hug, then waved as she walked out.
I tried not to pick at my collar as I waited for Eli to arrive. Then, finally, there was a knock at the door.
I took a deep breath and opened the door to see Eli on the other side, a bouquet of yellow tulips in his hand.
He held out the flowers, and I started crying from it.
“What did I do?” he asked, worry creasing his brow.
I shook my head. “Happy tears.”
He smiled. “Ok.” Then he stepped in and wrapped me in his arms. “If bringing you flowers makes you cry from happiness, I’ll have to bring them more often.”
I rested my head against him and let out a wet-sounding laugh. “I’ll need to bring you some too.” I took a deep breath to get my tears under control. “What are your favorites?”
He chuckled. “Promise you won’t laugh?”
“Um…”
“Carnations,” he stated.
I chuckled. “Carnations?”
“Hey, no laughing,” he chided, even as his laughter increased. “They come in all colors and are cheap, so I can have as big and colorful a bouquet as I want when I feel like having flowers.”
“You like colorful bouquets?” I asked.
“Mm-hmm.”
“Ok.” I took a chance and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
He smiled. “Nobody has ever bought me flowers before.”
“I’ll be your first then.”
He chuckled and kissed me again. “You’re my first in a lot of things.”
My face heated.
“Shall we?” he asked.
I nodded, then took the flowers in and set them in the same yellow vase he’d brought days before.
I jumped as his arms wrapped around me from behind and he kissed the back of my neck.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you,” he murmured.
I leaned back against him. “Just surprised.” I took a deep breath. “So… um… where are we going?”
“Bangkok Cuisine.”
I huffed a laugh, then turned to kiss him deeply. Somehow I had the feeling that he was exactly who I needed to be with.

Eli stood with me in the parking lot of my new therapist’s office, my hands in his. “Do you want me to walk you in?”
