Lance seemed slightly hesitant, then he was coming closer. His breath fanned over my face.

I closed my eyes and breathed deep his scent.

Then his lips were on mine, warm and slightly chapped, and a soft sigh of longing escaped me.

The kiss was over far too soon, and I chased it without thinking before realizing that there was too much air between us. One kiss, and it was everything. I was completely his for as long as he would have me.

“Was that ok?” Lance whispered.

I opened my eyes and met his gaze. “I dunno,” I teased. “I think I need another to be sure, maybe a bit longer too.”

A glorious smile spread across his face as I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him in for a second kiss.

The scratch of stubble against my face was a new—but not unwelcome—sensation. Then his lips parted, and I took the invitation for what it was, slipping my tongue into the warmth of his mouth.

Lance moaned softly as we explored each other’s mouths, only breaking the kiss to come up for air.

We only parted when our lips were kiss-swollen and we were both out of breath, but I already wanted more.

I wanted to kiss Lance every day for the rest of my life.

But first, we had to focus on his recovery.

It was early, but I knew I loved him, and I wanted the best for him. So we’d go at his pace, and I would support him however he needed.

Chapter 21 - Lance

Kenzie slapped my hands away from the collar of my shirt. “Stop fidgeting, you look fine.”

“But…” I protested. “What if I don’t look good enough? It’s our first date.”

“Really?” she deadpanned with a stare. “I think Eli will be more happy that you’re there than how you’re dressed.”

“Are you sure?”

She crossed her arms. “You ghosted him for weeks, and the first time he saw you after that you were in pajama bottoms and that old t-shirt you like.”

“It’s comfy,” I protested.

“And likely had a food stain or two on it. Trust me. It’s you he wants to see. Not your clothes.”

“I just…” I sighed. “I don’t want to disappoint him.”

She closed the distance between us and wrapped me in her arms. “I don’t know if you can, unless you turn into a total asshole.”

I smiled and leaned into her hug. “Thank you for… for everything. For believing me when I was at my lowest, and…”

She kissed my cheek. “You’re my best friend,” she murmured. “Of course I believe in you.”

I sighed happily. “You’re still the best.”

“The best is what you deserve,” she replied. “Now… Eli will be here in a few minutes, so I’m gonna scram. Enjoy your date, ok?”

I stepped back from her hug. “I will.”

“Call me and tell me how it went.”

“Ok.”
