“How’d your date go?” my friend Amber asked as I took a seat next to her for our monthly group brunch.
“I’m going to kill Josh,” I replied.
“That good, huh?”
“Chip is so cute,” I squealed in a fake-high voice. “Chip is so smart! Let me tell you about the giant shit Chip took yesterday.”
She burst into laughter. “Are you serious?”
I huffed. “Maybe not the part about the shit, but everything else. She probably didn’t even notice that I turned her down for a second date, as she’d mentioned that it was almost time for the damned dog’s walk.”
“Ouch, and you’d been so excited.”
“She’d sounded so good when Josh told me about her. Highly educated, good job, active lifestyle. She was pretty too, once I saw her. I thought maybe one of his blind date setups would actually turn out ok. Then…”
I sighed.
“Chip this, Chip that, another story about Chip. Every time I tried to change the subject she’d bring it back around to the dog in under a minute. At first I’d wondered how she was still single, but now I know.”
“Was there anything redeeming about her?”
“Ummm….” I scratched my jaw. “She really loved her dog?”
Amber laughed again. “Sounds like Josh deserves his demise.”
I sighed. “To be fair, he probably didn’t know her, just acted as an intermediary. But it’s definitely the last time he’s allowed to pawn me off as the single-friend. I don’t think I can take another blind date from one of his other friends.”
“What’s the plan? Back to swiping right on dating apps?”
I groaned and ran my hand through my hair. “I don’t know. I might take a break from dating. I’m just not feeling it lately.”
“What about being worried about dying old and alone?”
“I’d rather be alone than with somebody I can’t stand to be around for more than a few minutes.”
“That makes sense.”
The bell over the door jingled and both Amber and I turned to see Josh walking in.
Amber cupped her hands around her mouth. “Dead man walking!” she called out.
Josh cringed, and I realized that he must have already heard from the other side that I didn’t agree to a second date.
Too bad. People who play matchmaker need to face the music when a flame doesn’t ignite.
Chapter 3 - Lance
“Hi mom,” I said as I answered the phone.
“Hi sweetie. How are you doing?”
“I’m ok…”
Mom sighed. “You know better than to lie to me. Kenzie says otherwise.”
“You called her?”
