“The normal.”
“Gimme whatever generic doctor you got on sale this week.”
I laughed and grabbed a couple cans of the store brand soda, then returned and handed one to her.
“So what brought you by?”
She grinned. “Wanna go on a blind date? The sister of one of the gals from work is single.”
I plucked the can of soda from her hand. “Get out.”
She burst into laughter and retrieved the soda. “Kidding. I heard they’ve got live blues atCravin’ Cajuntonight. You interested?”
I beamed at her. “Hell yeah! Let me freshen up and we’ll go.”
“Great!”
Blues dancing with my bestie? How could I pass that up?
Chapter 5 - Lance
~1 Week Later~
“Don’t you ever knock?” I asked, not even bothering to uncurl from my spot on the couch.
“Not with you,” Kenzie replied, strolling in and plopping herself into the chair across from me. “It’s not as if you’d get up to let me in anyway.”
I was silent. It wasn’t as if she was wrong. Getting up, even for her, was too much effort.
“I brought some groceries,” she stated. “Things to stick in either the oven or microwave so that you don’t have to rely on takeout so much. You can handle that, right?”
I nodded.
She stood and walked to the door. I heard the rustle of bags as she set things in the fridge, then she leaned over the back of the couch. “Mind if I raid your closet?”
“For what?”
“I’m gonna find your dancing shoes.”
That made me look up at her. “What do you need my dancing shoes for? They’re men’s, and wouldn’t fit you anyway.”
She laughed. “I’m not going to wear them, silly.”
“Then what do you need them for?”
“To see if they need resoled.”
“Huh?”
“Catch up. I’m taking you dancing, and you’ll need your dancing shoes.”
“Wait. What?”
“I figured it out: the thing that you never did with the asshole. You said he never liked dancing, and only went once. Also, you mentioned that he complained the whole time. That means it’s not a happy memory. But there should be too many fun memories with me to count.”
“D-dancing? But I haven’t been in years.”
“Exactly. Who knows what state your shoes are in. But don’t worry. I found a great cobbler who fixed mine up great when I needed them resueded.”
