She grinned and bounced on her toes.

“What are you so excited about?” I asked.

“It’s a step,” she answered. “And I’ll take it!”

I sighed and put the new leftovers in the fridge, then tied the bag. I still didn’t understand what Kenzie was so excited about, but it was nice to see her smiling like that.

“Are you coming tonight?” Kenzie asked over the phone.

“Huh?” I asked. “Coming where?”

“Dancing? It’s a weekly event, you know.”

Had it already been a week? It didn’t feel like it, but it felt longer too. Days blurred together when time didn’t matter.

I was on the verge of refusing, but the memory of Kenzie’s smile came back to me.

Maybe… just maybe I could do it again.

“Sure.”

Kenzie squealed in excitement. “I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“See you then.”

Chapter 10 - Eli

“Earth to Eli… Eli… Anybody home?”

I blinked and noticed that Amber was staring at me from across the table. “Sorry, what were you saying?”

“Oh no you don’t. You don’t get to zone out that bad and then try to change the subject. You’ve got a crush. Who is she?”

“Come again?”

“I’ve known you for far too long to not know the signs when you’ve got somebody on your mind. Who is she? Do I know her? Where did you meet? Are you dating or just pining?”

I held up my hands as if they could fend off the barrage of questions. “Whoa. It’s nothing like that!”

“Uh-huh… Like I believe that. Come on. Give me the deets.”

I sighed. “It’s not a woman at all, and it’s not a crush. I just can’t stop thinking about Lance.”

“Who’s Lance?”

I scratched the back of my head. “The man who came with Kenzie last week.”

“The one who could dance, but didn’t? When did you talk to him?”

“Kenzie asked me to share the last dance with him. I was unsure at first, but he accepted.”

“Wait, you danced with him?”

“Yeah?” I asked, wondering why she seemed surprised.

“Why didn’t you say so?” she cried. “A bunch of us tried all night, but he kept turning us down. He only seemed interested in dancing with Kenzie, and it was clear he was good too!”
