I was about to tell her there wasn’t, but my mind went to the last dance of the night—the one with Eli. I’d mostly wanted to leave, but looking back, there had been something nice about it.

“I…” I sighed and focused on the half-empty containers.

“Lance?”

“It’s nothing.”

She leaned her head against my shoulder. “Back to the drawing board.”

“Kenz…”

“I’m not giving up on you Lance, even when you feel like giving up on yourself. I know there’s a happy place for you in the future. We just have to get you there.”

“You have more faith than I do.”

“Maybe that’s the problem. You need to believe that there’s a way out.”

I sighed and stood, disrupting her. I picked up the containers and looked inside. “You gonna have any more?”

“I’m done.”

“Ok.”

I closed the boxes and carried them to the fridge. But when I looked inside I frowned. There were too many boxes already there, which meant that a few needed to be tossed.

I placed the newest boxes on the counter, then pulled the trash can around and started dumping any leftovers that were more than a few days old.

“Lance?”

I turned to see Kenzie standing in the kitchen arch. “Yeah?”

“What are you doing?”

“Tossing leftovers.”

She blinked, then a brilliant smile crossed her face. “You’re doing it without being prompted!”

“Huh?”

She rushed over and pulled me to my feet before wrapping me in a crushing hug. “I knew dancing would be good for you!”

“Kenzie?”

“Don’t you get it Lance?” she asked. “This is the first time in months I’ve seen you emptying old stuff from your fridge without my having to remind you first!”

“Umm…”

She shook her head and hugged me again. “This is a good thing!”

“They’re just leftovers that need to be tossed.”

She chuckled and kissed my cheek. “Do you need a hand?”

I glanced into the trash can. “I think I’ve got it. I’ll take it out when I walk you to your car.”

“You’re walking me out?”

I stared at her. “It’s late.”
