“Pfft,” she snorted. “You’re the one who brought it up.”

“Did not.”

“You said, and I quote…” She flipped me off. “Therefore you brought it up.”

“You’re such a pain in the ass,” I teased.

“Yeah, but you love me for it,” she retorted with a grin.

“Yeah, yeah.”

Amber pushed herself off the stool as the song ended. “I’m gonna go ask Kenzie’s date to dance.”

I looked at the other man again, and shook my head. “I… don’t think they’re on a date, but good luck.”

She laughed and strolled to the other side of the hall… where she was promptly rejected.

But the man didn’t dance with Kenzie again either. He just… sat there, head hung and looking like he wanted to be elsewhere.

I was prepared to ask Amber about it, but she grabbed Kenzie and both women laughed as they danced.

I chuckled, shook my head, and turned to see how the playlist was going. Hopefully Jackson would be happy and would invite me to a second test.

Seeing people dancing to music I’d selected was a thrill, and I wanted to keep doing it.

Chapter 7 - Lance

Kenzie was trying, she really was. I knew she would have preferred to dance far more than she was, but she sat out at least half the songs to talk to and encourage me to participate.

I danced with her a number of times, but, as other women approached, I waved off any other invitations.

Leading took energy that I didn’t have; required a level of thought that I wasn’t capable of.

“Come on,” Kenzie said, holding out a hand.

I shook my head. It wasn’t the first refusal of the night. “I’m done, unless you want to lead.”

“Ok, I’ll lead.”

I started to reach for her hand in order to humor her, but my hand dropped again. “Sorry.”

She knelt in front of me. “Was this a bad idea?”

I forced a smile and shook my head. “You tried.”

“That wasn’t a no.” She hugged me. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t say that.” I sniffled. “Go on, don’t waste what’s left of the night babysitting me. Have fun.”

“Are you sure?”

“You love dancing. I want you to have fun.”

“I want you to have fun too.”

“I’m just not there yet.”

She sighed. “Want me to take you home?”
