Oscar and Miriam returned in record time, and helped Theo maneuver me to a kneeling position on a large towel. Miriam wiped sweat from my brow as Oscar assisted Theo.

“How many billionaires do you think have given birth on a beach?” I asked between contractions.

“How many billionaires have assisted one of their billionaire best friends give birth on a beach?” Theo asked.

 “Point.”

“Do you feel the urge to push?” Theo asked after checking me in ways I didn’t want to think about.

 I nodded. “Yes!”

“Ok. I think it’s all good.”

 “You think?”

“The practice dummy wasn’t very talkative, so I have to rely on what instructors and training manuals said.”

I froze, then started laughing and crying at the same time. Of course Theo would say something like that.

“Ok Corey,” Theo said, suddenly all-business. “I’m not a doctor. I’m a lifeguard who’s only taken a class, so you’re going to have to trust yourself. You want to avoid pushing until your body forces you to push. I think you’re ready, but don’t rush because of me.”

I winced as another contraction started, then cried out.

 My baby wanted out—now.

I gripped Miriam’s hand as I bore down, wishing that Nate was beside me.

 Pain tore through me.

“I’ve got the head,” Theo said. “Take a break. One big push with the next contraction should do it.”

I nodded and gulped several deep breaths. Then the pain and another urge to push overwhelmed me.

I screamed through the pain, then it was like all the pressure was released at once.

 “I’ve got him,” Theo announced.

I started crying in relief, and my tears turned to sobs as I heard my baby’s cry.

“Miriam, Oscar,” Theo ordered. “Help him lay down on a clean towel. We can wait for the ambulance now.”

A moment later I was laying on a towel, somebody having piled just enough sand behind me for a slight incline.

Theo set my baby on my chest, and I started crying again.

He had Nate’s blond hair and blue eyes.

 He was gorgeous.

 “Corey!”

I looked up to see Nate rushing into my hospital room.

I smiled and reached for him.

“Where is he?” Nate asked, panicked when he didn’t see our baby.
