Maybe, just maybe, I still had a chance for a family of my own.

Corey’s eyes widened as I held out the bouquet. “Peonies?” he whispered. “How did you know?”

 “Zaya,” I admitted.

He set the flowers down on what I assumed was a table just inside the apartment, then flung his arms around my neck.

“Thank you,” he whispered against me.

 “For the flowers?”

“For them being peonies. Nobody else has ever thought to find out what my favorites are.”

“You deserve to receive the ones you like most, “ I replied as I ran my hand up and down his back, noting how easily he fit into my embrace. He was so free with his emotions, and seemed to be able to pull me out of my shell.

I was happy to know him.

 “Ready?” I asked.

He stepped back out of my arms. “Do I look ok? You said to dress nice.”

I studied him, the way the dark-gray sports jacket hugged him, how his mint green shirt complemented his eyes.

How had I never realized how pretty his eyes were before? The rich brown suited him, a reminder of how grounded he was as a person. But there was depth, flecks of gold that made me want to keep looking at them.

“I… uh…” he started. “That bad?”

I shook my head. “No. You look… it’s perfect.”

 He smiled softly.

I turned and offered him my arm, then led him to where I had a sedan waiting.

“You sure you don’t want me to drive?” he teased.

“You can if you want,” I replied. “But I figured you might like the treat.”

He smiled and leaned against me. “Care to tell me where we’re going?”

I laughed. “You’ll see soon enough.”

I couldn’t take my eyes off Corey as we rode. He looked out the window as if he was seeing the city anew.

“First time in a chauffeured sedan?” I asked.

He looked at me and shook his head. “Not quite. I’ve ridden a few times with Cody, Theo and Zaya.”

 “Only a few?”

He smiled. “I mean, except for Zaya, we were all used to driving ourselves around. Old habits die hard.”

“I see. So the novelty hasn’t worn off yet.”

He shook his head. “I guess not.”

The car slowed and pulled up to a stop at the front of La Cravate Noire, and it took Corey an adorable few seconds to make the connection.
