“About time,” Wes declared.

“Did I hear that Nate and Corey have a date?” Jordan asked.

“Yes,” Cadence answered before I could.

“Fucking finally,” Jordan responded. “No offense Nate,” he continued. “But maybe this should have been the solution from the start.”

“I don’t know if you should be the one scolding him,” Wes said. “You and Theo didn’t have the best start.”

“That wasn’t my doing, if you’ll recall.”

“Eh, maybe you could have done more.”

“I really will go home and rub Theo’s feet if all you all are going to do is shit on me all day.”

Wes laughed and draped an arm over Jordan’s shoulders. “If you leave, you don’t get brisket.”

 “Fuck you,” Jordan sighed.

“Love you too man,” Wes said, giving him a theatrical kiss on the side of the head.

Jordan shoved him off, but the way they fell into step beside each other showed that their friendship had a strong enough foundation for the teasing to withstand.

Maybe, now that I’d met Corey, I’d be able to reach out and find friends half as loyal.

“That’s what you’re wearing for your first date with your fated mate?” Zaya asked from where he was leaning on the doorframe.

“Corey said to dress casual,” I responded, hoping that my khaki shorts and short-sleeve button down wasn’t too casual.

 “You made him pick?”

I shook my head. “He said he knew the perfect thing, and asked if he could take the lead.”

“Oh,” Zaya chuckled. “Ok then.” He walked in and bumped his shoulder against mine. “Nervous?”

 “Of course.”

“Even after spending so much time with him this week?”

I considered the question, then nodded. “It’s different now. Before I was scared of meeting him at all, now I’m worried that I’ll let him down.”

“I see.” He paused. “Well, you had better get a move on, he arrived a few minutes ago.”

“Why didn’t you start with that?” I demanded.

“Because I’m your brother, I’m supposed to be a brat at times.”

“You’re also a grown man and a papa,” I replied, ruffling his hair.

“Doesn’t change the fact that I have to be a jerk to you every once in a while,” he joked.

“That suggests that you’re not a jerk at times,” I teased.

 “Hey, I’m delightful.”

“Uh-huh,” I deadpanned. “Is Corey in the sitting room?”
