I licked my lips then tried again. “I understand now, and I know what it means. You might never develop the feelings you need to be my mate. Either way, I’ll still be your friend, if you want that. But…” I squeezed his hand. “I’d like to try. I believe that fate pushed us together for a reason. My preference would be to date for a while. But what do you want to do?”

Nate gave me a soft smile. “I think I’d like to try dating too.”

Butterflies flitted in my middle. It wouldn’t be the flash-in-a-pan romance like I’d expected, but maybe I still had a chance to be with my alpha.

 Chapter 14 - Nate

“Fore!” Jordan yelled before swinging his club.

“Why’d he yell?” I whispered to Wes as the club connected with the ball. “I haven’t seen any other players close.”

 “Just watch,” Cadence replied.

I tracked the ball, amazed as it seemed to curve off in an impossible direction before dunking into a water hazard.

 “How?” I asked, mouth agape.

Jordan merely sighed. “Fuck my life.”

“We don’t know either,” Cadence replied as he set up for his shot. “Jordan’s been playing long enough he shouldn’t be this consistently bad.”

“Because of that, there’s a rule,” Wes explained. “Jordan hits, he warns others. We’ve been lucky so far, but one of these days one of his shots is sure to wind up on another hole and knock somebody out.”

“Fuck both of ya,” Jordan griped.

“Have you tried a professional teacher?” I asked.

Jordan pretended to scrub a hand down his face, but the middle finger held up was a clear indication that he didn’t like the question.

“Several times,” Wes answered. “I got him lessons with one of the top instructors in the country for Christmas one year. Trust me, this is actually quite an improvement.”

“If all you’re going to do today is shit on me, I’ll call a car and go home,” Jordan snapped. “I can rub Theo’s feet before the party or something.”

“Dude, you should be doing that anyway,” Wes laughed. “I’m surprised he let you come as close as he is to giving birth.”

“He practically shoved me out the door. Something about how he doesn’t care how they do it nowadays, baby showers are supposed to be omega-only.”

“That reminds me,” Cadence said. “I’ve got diapers for you at the house, since technically this is your diaper-party.”

“If it’s my diaper-party, why the hell are we playing golf?”

“To teach you that you don’t get what you want, especially with a kid,” Cadence laughed.

“We’ll do barbecue and beer later,” Wes added. “I’ve had caterers out with a smoker since yesterday. It’ll all be done about the time we’re finished here.”

“At least you plan to feed me,” Jordan grumbled.

I smiled. According to Cadence, Wes and Jordan had been college friends, but now they were all close.

Wes took a shot, then motioned to me. “You’re up, show us what you’ve got.”

I nodded and studied the green in the distance. My ball sailed through the air, and, while it landed farther from the hole than I would have liked, it was respectable given that I had never played the course before.

Jordan took another shot, which at least landed on the fairway that time. The others gave him a ribbing, then we all started walking to take our next shots.

“Zaya tells me that you and Corey have a date tonight?” Cadence said.

“Yes. After the shower, of course.”
