I looked down at Bryce. “Don’t you want to go play with your friends?”

“Nooooo!” he shrieked.

“Why?”

He blinked at me, clearly confused at being asked to explain himself.

“Is anybody mean to you?” I asked.

Bryce shook his head. “No?”

“Do they share toys?”

He nodded.

“Do you like their toys?”

He nodded again.

“Do you like playing with them?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want to play with them tonight?”

He was silent, clearly trying to figure out where I was going with my questions.

I set Bryce on the floor, then knelt to look him in the eye. “Is the reason you don’t want to go just because Ellen or your papa told you that you had to?”

He sniffled, and I knew I’d hit the nail on the head. He wasn’t able to express himself enough yet and was mad that nobody asked him.

“It’s ok Bryce,” I said in a calm voice. “Sometimes you have to do things because somebody else tells you to, but think about how much fun you’ll have playing with your friends. Doesn’t that sound better than being stuck in your room with Ellen all night?”

He made a face, then slowly nodded.

I smiled. “Good. So head back and let Ellen help you get ready so you can have fun tonight too, ok?”

“‘K.”

I stood and looked at Ellen, who mouthed a ‘Thank you.’at me before walking over and offering her hand to Bryce. Then they were headed back towards his room.

“And yet you’re adamant about not having kids.”

I turned to see Zaya leaned against a wall.

I sighed. “I’m adamant about not looking for my omega. There’s a difference.”

“But the end result is the same, unless you decide to adopt.”

“Not many single alphas get approved.”

“Not many single alphas have fuck you money. Hell, you could easily afford a surrogate if you preferred the biological route.”

I shuddered at the thought. Somehow the concept that anybody except my fated mate would give birth to my children was repulsive—especially if he never even got the opportunity.

Zaya sighed and pushed off the wall. “Don’t worry about the party,” he said, changing the subject. “Everybody is mated except for one omega. And before you ask, it’s not a setup. He’s best friends with a couple other invitees and I would have been a real asshole to invite them and not him, especially when he’s one of my friends now too.”

“Thank you,” I said.
