I hadn’t been looking forward to the return flight home until Nate introduced me to an unexpected benefit of private planes: that sex was a completely acceptable way to pass the time.

His argument was that there was a bedroom, and that we might as well take advantage of it.

It was definitely better than staring out at the Atlantic.

I laughed as Bandit yipped and scurried around Nate’s legs, excited and demanding attention from his chosen person.

According to the shelter staff, Bandit had been in low spirits after Nate and I had headed to London, but his tail started wagging as soon as he spotted us again.

Everybody agreed that the dog had picked us, Nate specifically, and since I was already an approved foster we were allowed to take him home that day.

Nate, of course, went a bit overboard in the pet store, buying any toy that Bandit picked. But to see both of them so obviously happy warmed me in ways I couldn’t explain.

My mate, and our first dog as a couple.

It was everything I’d always wanted.

“Do you have a bit of time between your final walks for the day and the beginning of your volunteer shift?” Nate asked over the phone.

I adjusted the leashes in my hand as the dogs tried to take advantage of what they thought was a distraction.

“A bit,” I replied. “Why?”

“The realtor called and wants us for a walkthrough. Chances are the house will go fast, so we need to see it and put in our offer if we want it before it hits any listings.”

“Wait, it’s going on the open market?”

“Apparently. I know it’s unusual, but it is what it is. So can you make it?”

“Send me the details.”

“Will do. See ya later.”

“Love you.”

“Love you too. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I finished the daily walks, then drove to the address he’d texted me.

The house was perfectly located between Cody’s and Zaya’s, but it was as the realtor opened the door that Nate and I exchanged a glance. The inside was bright and airy, architecture in a coastal style.

It was perfect.

“How much?” Nate asked as we concluded our tour.

We’d found our home.
