I pulled him into my arms as the music started. Even if I only had this dance, I would take it. Holding him was like a drug that I’d never broken the addiction of. Everything was right in the world when he was in my arms, and I felt like the luckiest alpha alive.

“Why are you here?” Wes asked softly from where he’d settled against my chest.

“To support you.”

“But why?”

I lifted his chin and looked into his eyes. “Because it’s you.”

“I thought you hated me.”

I used my free arm to squeeze him tight. “I could never hate you.”

He sighed as if I’d just shattered years worth of misconceptions.

“I’m sorry,” I murmured. “I’m sorry I failed you.”

He slumped against me. “Why did you stay away?”

I kissed his hair. “I couldn’t bear to watch you get hurt again, and I couldn’t protect you.”

“It’s not your fault,” he breathed. “It was never your fault, you were just the excuse.”

“Wes?”

He looked up at me, tears in his eyes. “I didn’t see it then, but I do now. My parents were never going to let me perform that night, because it would have made me happy. It could have given me the opportunity to do what I wanted with my future, not what they wanted for me. That it hurt you too was just icing on the cake for them.”

I bristled. I’d always known his parents were evil, but…

Wes pushed back against me. “I’m sorry, but… I’ve gotta go.”

He rushed from my arms before I had a chance to protest, and I only caught myself in time to turn and see him running out of the barn.

I rushed after him, but as the song ended and couples broke up I found myself in a crowd. By the time I reached the door I saw him driving off.

“Wes…”

“Go after him.”

I turned to see Sean standing beside me.

“What?”

“Go after him.”

“I don’t know where he’s going.”

“What were you talking about before he ran?”

“The night of the performance.”

Sean pursed his lips. “My money is on the new studio.”

“Why there?”

“Because it’s his new dream.”

“I don’t know where it is.”
