He nodded. “That you’re in love with somebody else. But you also said something that made me think.”
“What was that?”
“That I shouldn’t be somebody’s second choice. It hit hard. I think I’ve been single for so long that I forgot that.”
“Everybody deserves to be somebody’s first choice.”
He smiled. “I need to keep reminding myself of that.”
I held out my hand and he gave me the flier and a thumbtack.
“Can I ask a question?” Avery asked.
“What’s that?”
He blew out a long breath. “If this omega was your high school fling, and you’re still in love, what happened?”
“I failed him,” I sighed. “His parents didn’t approve of our relationship, and they hurt him in order to break us up after threatening me didn’t work. He’d have never been hurt if I’d left him alone.”
“But you’re adults now, why not just go after him?”
“How could I? Besides, I don’t think he wants me back.”
“Why not?”
“He’s never reached out.”
“Have you?”
“I… I didn’t want to hurt him again.”
“Maybe you should talk to him before deciding that he doesn’t want you anymore.”
I glanced down at the flier in my hands.
Avery tapped the paper. “That look says something; that you expect him to be there.”
“The fundraiser dance is for him to open a studio of his own.”
“Great. I’ll join you so you don’t have to go alone, and you’ll be able to find time to talk to him.”
The silence was thick between us for several seconds.
“I’m going anyway,” Avery said. “Might as well go together.”
I swallowed, then nodded. Maybe he was right. It was time I found out whether Wes and I had a future together or not.
Chapter 9 - Wes
~Saint Patrick’s Day~
“How much did you spend on decorations?” Sean asked as he carried in a couple boxes.
“Maybe a hundred dollars?” I guessed. “Thank goodness for the dollar store.”
Sean peeked into the box. “These are from the dollar store?”
“They look pretty good for the price, don’t they?”
