I looked again and started to see what he meant. “May I?”

He nodded and I removed my shoes before striding out to the hardwood in my socks. I spent a few minutes on a simple routine, and felt the irregularities on the surface. I could also tell that it was directly on the concrete below.

I walked back to where he was and slipped on my shoes again. “I’d need to upgrade to a sprung floor anyway.”

 “But everything else?” he asked.

 “It’s perfect!”

I had my space, now I just needed to get the funds to make it happen.

 Chapter 6 -José

 ~February~

 “José! Come in!”

I walked into the office and took a seat while my contact at the bank, Julian, finished something on the computer.

Finally he turned to me. “What can I do for you today?”

“I wanted to confirm that everything is still set to close on the Miller deal next week.”

He glanced at a calendar, then nodded. “It is, but we could have discussed it via email.”

“True, but I was in the area. One of my friends just opened up that coffee shop down the street, the Jumpstart Cafe.”

“Oh, I’ve been there a couple times. Really good stuff.”

“Yep. Other alphas made fun of my friend, Chase, when he liked baking and cooking in high school. But look at him now.”

“Lines out the door almost every morning.”

 I grinned. “That’s what I hear.”

He glanced at the computer again. “So you just needed to check on the Miller deal.”

I sighed. “Yeah. I want them off my plate, and I was worried they’d try to force you into a later closing date. They asked me and I refused to ask for them. They pushed back their own closing with their continued attempts to negotiate every line of the loan contract.”

“Oh they tried, and I shut them down too. One, they were trying to go around you as their broker, and two, I agree that they’d have closed last week or the week before if they hadn’t been so argumentative about everything.”

“I don’t know if I’ll work with this realtor again.”

 “Not one of your regulars?”

“No. It was a favor for one of mine, another one in their same office who’d had issues finding somebody to work with this couple.”

 “I can see why now.”

“Hell, I should buy you a six-pack as thanks for dealing with them, even if through me.”

“Lord knows I wouldn’t turn it down. They were a nightmare, and I know you softened it as much as you could.”

“I still don’t know how they got your direct number.”

He shook his head. “People like that have a way.”

“Yeah.” I stood. “I guess I should get back to the office. I’ve got an appointment with a potential new client this afternoon.”
