My cheeks heated. “You… heard that?”

She winked. “We teased him hard about it.”

“Oh…”

She laughed. “Don’t worry, it’s all in good fun.”

I bit my lip and nodded. “Ok.”

Her cheery demeanor faded slightly. “You ok?”

I forced a smile. “Yeah.”

She studied me for several seconds, then sighed. “If ya say so. I’ll let Chase know you’re here.”

“Thanks,” I muttered before retreating with my coffee.

It was one thing when it was just some idle flirting from Chase, but now other people were invested as well. How would they feel when they realized I could never be what an alpha like him deserved?

“Please don’t make that face.”

I jumped and looked up to see Chase standing beside my table with a cupcake on a plate.

“What?”

He motioned to the chair opposite me. “Mind if I sit?”

“Go ahead.”

He set the plate on the table before taking a seat. “Natalie said she might have said something that offended you.”

I shook my head. “No, nothing like that.”

“Are you sure?”

“I…” I took a deep breath. “I just didn’t realize other people knew about your offer of a cupcake.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, it’s a small shop. Not much stays private between myself and my employees.”

“This is your shop?”

He grinned. “Yep! I opened it just last year. It was a dream of mine to have a little coffee shop where I could serve fresh baked goods and have a few menu options.”

“Congratulations on opening it,” I replied.

“Thank you. Now, was there a reason you were worried about other people knowing about the cupcake?”

I looked down at my laptop, which had gone to sleep while we talked. “I… just…”

“Saved by the bell,” another voice interrupted, and I looked up to see another alpha bearing my salad.

“Thank you,” I mumbled.

“I’ll get this knucklehead out of your way so you can eat,” the other alpha said.

“Hey,” Chase protested.

“Come on, boss. You’ve got brownies in the oven, and you know I’m not as good with knowing when they’re done.”
