“Their nanny decided to take them for a supervised walk.”

Cody sighed, pushed up his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Nanny… God I still can’t get used to that.”

“You’re not going to hire one, are you?” I asked, taking several steps away and dropping onto a couch.

Cody turned and joined me. “I haven’t decided. I’ve been training my replacement at work, but I don’t exactly know what I would do if I’m not working.”

“You could always do the internet thing, like Zaya,” Corey said, referring to another resident of Billionaire Row.

“Except Zaya’s objectively gorgeous,” Cody argued. “And he had an established audience before he was mated. It’s also just not my thing.”

He sighed. “No, I think I’ll probably just work part-time for Donna. Fill in when she needs the help, yanno.”

I laughed. “A billionaire working for middle-class wages.”

“You should do like Theo and me,” Corey said. “Start your own business.”

Cody chuckled, then burst into laughter. “You guys are nuts.”

I smiled. “That’s why you love us.”

He leaned into me again.”Yeah. You two have been here for me through everything.”

“And now you’re getting married,” Corey said. “Don’t forget about us.”

“As if you’d let me.” Cody replied.

We all looked up at a knock on the door, then Cody’s papa stuck his head through. “Wes’s friend Jordan just called. They’re on their way over. Are you ready?”

Cody closed his eyes then nodded.

His papa made his way over and rested his hands on Cody’s shoulders. “I’m happy to see you happy. You deserve it.”

Cody looked up at him. “Thanks papa.”

“Don’t let the past taint today, okay?”

 Cody nodded. “I won’t.”

His papa leaned in and kissed his forehead. “Let’s head out so you can marry your mate.”

 “Ok.”

I sipped my champagne and watched Cody and Wes on the temporary dance floor. They looked so happy, and jealousy once again curled through my middle.

Was it so wrong to want that kind of love for myself?

I sighed and forced a smile. There was still a long night ahead of me, and I needed to be there for my best friend.

I’d mope about being single later.

I looked around. Wes’s wealth meant that most of the after-party work would be taken care of, but Jordan and I were still in charge of making sure that it all happened as planned since Cody and Wes would be on a private plane to Paris as soon as the reception was over.

It was strange seeing the signs of Cody’s new wealth all around. I knew that he’d told the wedding planner to downplay it, but for those of us in the middle class it was glaringly obvious. The servers that had accompanied the caterers all wore pristine uniforms, and the menu options had included entrees such as duck or beef wellington.

I’d heard several of the people on Cody’s side exclaim how delicious the food was, not used to the slightly-more-expensive options. However, associates of Wes’s father had proclaimed the menu quaint.
