“Do you miss it?”
He shrugged. “Sometimes. But I can always cook when I feel like it. On those days when I just want to relax it’s nice knowing that I have something ready and all I need to do is toss it in an oven or pan.”
“I see.”
“What about you?” he asked. “Do you cook often?”
I shook my head. “I have my list of standard easy recipes, and I rarely stray from them.”
He chuckled. “That’ll probably change once the cravings hit.”
I froze, fork halfway to my mouth, and he did as well.
He sighed and set his fork on the side of his plate. “We really can’t avoid talking about this.”
I looked down at my half-eaten pancakes. “No, I guess not.”
I jumped as he placed his hand on top of my own.
“Tell me why, Theo,” he begged. “Why did you run? Why did you block me?” He took a deep breath. “Why didn’t you tell me about the baby?”
I knew it was coming, but I still didn’t know what to say.
“Please…”
I squeezed my eyes shut. “Everything went wrong,” I whispered.
The warmth of his hand on mine vanished. “Oh…”
It was one word, one syllable, but the anguish in his voice was unmistakable. He thought that I regretted being with him.
My eyes flew open and I reached for him. “Not like that!”
I grabbed his hand between both of mine. Then I took a deep breath as I held it against me.
“Cody is my best friend,” I started. “I was so happy for him when he finally accepted Wes, and I would never do anything that would make him choose sides between me and his mate. Then I met you. You’re everything I want in an alpha. Kind, funny, smart, and good looking too.”
I paused and took a deep breath. “But what would happen if we got together and it didn’t work out? I knew you had the money to visit on a whim, and would likely be around for holidays and other events. I didn’t want them to have to decide who to invite in order to keep the peace.”
“So you pushed me away, for Cody?”
I nodded.
“But what about what you want?”
I looked at him. “What do you mean?”
“Is it fair to you to put your own desires aside for him? And how would he feel if he knew that you’d put his needs above your own?”
I thought back to Thanksgiving, and how Cody had been more upset that I hadn’t told him about the pregnancy right away, than he was about my sleeping with Jordan.
In fact, the only thing that seemed to concern him with regards to Jordan was that I hadn’t told him either.
He stood, closed the space between us, and pulled my head to his middle. “What do you want Theo? Not what’s best for Cody, not what’s best for Wes, or even me. What do you want for yourself?”
I closed my eyes again. “You,” I whispered. “You. Us. Raising this baby together.”
He sighed. “Say it again.”
