Chapter 8 - Jordan

~New Year’s Eve~

Ilooked around the guest bedroom and shuddered.

Of course Wes and his staff didn’t know that it was the same room where my life had changed. They weren’t aware of the joy when Theo and I came together, and how my heart absolutely shattered when I found him gone.

I took a deep breath. I wasn’t going to make a scene or request a different room. It didn’t help anybody if I did. I would only be staying there for a few days. Surely I could handle it.

I stepped into the en suite and freshened up, then headed downstairs to where the party setup was in full swing. Caterers brought in trays of food for a buffet-style dinner, while Wes seemed preoccupied with the number of champagne bottles.

Deciding that Wes was busy, I set to walking through the house. I hadn’t been back since the wedding, and I was eager to see what rooms had been finished since then.

The house definitely had an omega’s touch. Everything was pristine, yet inviting. Quality was apparent in the furniture selections, but I didn’t feel like I’d be scolded for sitting on the wrong couch.

I sighed. Maybe I’d been too involved with other rich people. It was part of being an executive at a company like Abramsoft, but it was exhausting at times.

Sometimes a man just wanted an old garishly-patterned department-store couch like the ones he’d known growing up. Even better if an old afghan crocheted by a grandparent was draped over the back.

I shook my head and made my way upstairs again, wondering how close Wes and Cody were to finishing their nursery. I walked in expecting it to be empty, but instead saw Cody and Theo.

My heart stopped. It was the first time I’d seen my mate since I’d held him in my arms, and he was just as beautiful as he’d been that night.

Theo and Cody shared a look, then Theo shook his head and walked out, brushing past me and momentarily bathing me in his scent—which had only gotten deeper since I’d seen him last.

Oh I wanted to turn and pull him into my arms, hold him again, breathe him deep and apologize for whatever I’d done wrong to make him run. Somehow I held back, forcing myself to give him the space he wanted.

“Jordan,” Cody said, with a bit too much pep in his voice. “I thought you’d be downstairs helping Wes.”

I forced a smile. “He was counting champagne bottles, so I decided to see how the decorators did. Is the nursery finished?”

Cody relaxed visibly. “Almost. We haven’t found a chair I like for feeding in here yet, but the rest of the furniture has arrived.”

I looked around and admired the setup. The room was decorated in a cool but cozy scheme of light blues and grays. One wall featured a cartoonish cloudscape, which continued into the room with more cloud-inspired decor.

“It looks ready,” I replied.

Cody smiled and patted his belly, which was significantly rounder than it had been the last time I’d seen him. “Only about six weeks left, so it’s time to make sure everything’s done for this little one.”

I laughed. “You’re starting to sound like Wes.”

“His excitement might be wearing off.”

“I will say the smile is a good look on you. Much better than the frown you were wearing the day I spilled coffee on you.”

“To be fair, you did spill coffee on me. Anybody would be annoyed.”

“Point taken.”

There was a moment of silence, and everything in me wanted to ask him about Theo—to find out if he knew why my omega ran.

But neither Cody nor Wes deserved to be in the middle of the drama.

I sighed. “I guess I’ll go see if Wes needs help counting the champagne bottles.”

“I’m sure he’ll be glad to see you.”

I turned and walked out of the nursery, feeling even more despondent.
