“She was a mega-bitch, that’s for sure,” José said. “But once again, that was her word only.”

“Then there was that one thing with… what was his name…” Chase mused. “Oh yeah, Brett. Do you remember that?”

I shook my head. “What thing?”

Another friend, Alan, leaned in slightly. “Draw two. And that shit with Brett was fucked up.”

José dealt Alan the cards while I waited for him to continue.

“Explain,” I finally said once I was tired of waiting.

“You really don’t know?” Chase asked.

 I shook my head.

“Jessica beat the shit out of Brett,” Alan replied. “Off campus of course, and it got swept under the rug because they were only days away from going to state for cheerleading.”

“Why would she go after him?” I asked.

Alan shook his head. “This is all rumor only, I wasn’t there. But supposedly he’d found the courage to ask Sean out, and had told a few people that Sean had accepted.”

 “Wait… What?”

Chase nodded and accepted three cards from José. “Who knows if it was true, but Brett was a good guy and not the type to lie. Jessica however…”

 I growled under my breath.

“Hear hear,” Alan said. “She pulled so much shit and never faced any consequences because she was the school darling.”

 “Yeah,” Chase agreed.

“Back to the point at hand though,” José cut in. “I don’t know if I’d continue to believe anything that bitch said. The only person who said that she and Sean were dating… was her.”

I thought about Elaine’s advice:“Maybe it’s time you reconsider the source of that information…”

Could I really have believed a lie for a decade?
