Chapter 10 - Lowell

 ~May~

Isipped from my glass of sparkling grape juice and watched Sean chat with his friends across the ballroom.

I was definitely the luckiest alpha from our class. While all of the omegas from high school had grown up and become more beautiful in their adult bodies, Sean was still the handsomest of them all.

Part of me still couldn’t believe that he’d chosen me as his mate, but there he was, my mark proudly on display on the back of his neck and his belly rounding with our baby.

“You look like a lovesick idiot.”

I turned to see José grinning at me and laughed. “You’re not much better, you know. Don’t think I haven’t seen you all dreamy-eyed around Wade.”

 “Yeah, yeah.”

“Why not ask him out? It’s obvious that you still have a thing for him.”

He sighed, and glanced at where Wade and Sean were talking. “I wish I could but…”

 “What’s wrong?”

“Do you know why we broke up in the first place?”

“No, I just remember you being upset and pissed off.”

“His parents threatened to disown him if he kept dating me.”

 I blinked. “Why?”

“To put it bluntly… I’m not white.”

I stared, slack-jawed. “They do realize that they live in a city with a Spanish name… don’t they?”

José scratched the back of his neck. “I don’t think that matters to them.”

“Yikes. No wonder you seemed so pissed about it.”

He sighed. “I just can’t put him through all that, no matter how much I still want him in my life.”

“I think I understand, but also, fuck that noise. He’s an adult now and can make his own choices.”

“I wish it was that simple.”

I was about to argue that it could be when his expression changed to one of disgust.

“You might want to go save your man,” José said.

I turned to see Jessica sauntering up to the group Sean was in, leering at my mate.

“Come on. You should protect yours too,” I countered, which earned me a shocked sputter.

Even if José couldn’t date Wade, I knew he’d still want to save him from the likes of Jessica.

We were halfway to the group, and Sean was already starting to look uncomfortable at the way Jessica had butted into the conversation, when something unexpected happened.

A tiny pregnant omega I’d never seen before stomped towards the group, grabbed Jessica by the lapels of her dinner jacket and pulled her down so that she was at eye level with him.

José and I rushed forward, ready to intervene, even if we couldn’t stand her.
