How soon was too soon when it came to deciding that Lowell was my alpha? I knew people who had dated for years and still not mated, but I was ready to take a mark after only one night of kisses.

Then again, fated mates were often bonded within hours or days of meeting. So would anybody really judge us for a quick mating?

“I recognize that look,” Lowell said with a soft chuckle. “You’re framing arguments in your head.”

I blinked. “Huh?”

“You always had that same look whenever you were about to take the podium during debates. You’re trying to find a way to justify your view.”

My face heated with a blush. He’d noticed?

Lowell leaned over the center console and lifted the back of my hand to his lips. “I always loved that look on your face, because once you’d decided, you could blow me away with your eloquence, even when we were in opposing positions.”

“Lowell..”

He used his free hand to draw me in and placed a soft kiss on me. “You’ve captivated me for as long as I’ve known you.”

“Why didn’t you ever say anything?” I whispered.

His smile turned strained. “It wasn’t my place. You were taken, and I thought you preferred female alphas.”

“What do you mean?”

“You were dating Jessica.”

I pulled back and scowled. “What are you talking about?”

He frowned. “She made sure every alpha in school knew that you were her boyfriend. She supposedly even beat Brett when he asked you out. Are you saying that you weren’t dating her?”

My eyes widened as I started to understand just how much more vile she’d been than even I had known. “Date her? I couldn’t stand her!”
