“Dane mix,” he replied. “Corey thinks they were abandoned by a breeder who realized they couldn’t charge as much for mixed-breed pups.”

“Damn you,” I whined. Theo knew Danes were my dream dogs, but that apartment rules meant I couldn’t have one.

He laughed. “You should relax. You’ve been working far too hard. Puppies are just what you need.”

“I hate that you’re right.”

“You say that now, but I know you’ll be happy once you’ve gotten some doggo time in.”

I sighed. “Ok, ok. Let’s go play with some puppies.”

He grinned. “Grumpy Cody go away, happy Cody’s here to stay.”

I flipped him off, which only made him laugh as he danced down the hall singing ‘doggo time’ to some tune only he could hear.

~ 1 Week Later ~

“Cody?”

I blinked, stood, then walked over to peek into Donna’s office. “Yeah?”

“Was there a pool cleaning at the Henderson place on Monday?”

“Yeah. It was nasty after their party and I called it in so that they could continue to use the pool for the rest of their vacation.”

“Did you forget to add it to the schedule?”

I frowned. I’d put it in while the wife of the family was screaming at me that Monday afternoon meant several hours of her kids not using the pool and spoiling her afternoon plans.

I shook my head. “I know I added it. She was bitching at me the whole time that she’d have to entertain her kids rather than let them play in the pool, but the earliest the pool guys could get there was three.”

“Strange.” She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “I’ll be glad to see this family gone. They’ve been nothing but a headache.”

I nodded. “Same. After they found out that the pool wouldn’t be cleaned until the afternoon they demanded a nanny to take the kids out for a few hours.”

She scowled. “I see the nanny.”

“But not the pool cleaner?”

She shook her head.

I wracked my memory, trying to figure out why one would show up and not the other, when I’d scheduled them at the same time. Then I remembered the issues with Theo’s scheduling the week before.

“Donna?”

“Hmm?”

“I’m gonna drop by the office supply store for a paper planner.”

She tilted her head slightly. “What’s on your mind?”

“There was another appointment that wasn’t in the scheduler last week. I just assumed I’d missed it, but now I’m not so sure. I’d like to make a paper backup until we can track down the problem.”

She nodded. “Good call.”

I returned the nod and turned to leave. Then the phone rang.
