“That’s not any better.”

“Hey, I apologized and gave him money for dry cleaning.”

“At least there’s that,” I replied, rubbing a hand down my face.

“He was kinda cute, in a nerdy way. Absolutely your type. Glasses, curly hair, seemed kinda shy.”

“I’m too busy to think about dating.” I paused. “Speaking of being busy, why did you decide to go yourself? You’re the COO. One of the salespeople should have gone if an in-person visit was really so important.”

He shrugged. “I’m thinking about buying a vacation house there. I mean… I can afford it. But I was also trying to decide if I’d want to have it rented out when I’m not there, or just maintained. So while I didn’t discuss the possibility of having them manage whatever house I eventually buy, discussing their services as I pitched the ReservdIt package let me get an idea of what they handle.”

“You might want to hire a house manager for tasks like that in the future.”

He burst into laughter. “There you go saying rich kid things again. I’m sure one day I’ll want things like house managers, chefs and maids, but I’ve still got one foot firmly rooted in my middle-class upbringing. Just because I might be a billionaire now, doesn’t mean I’ve fully figured out how to live like one.”

I ran my hand across my chin. “Dad said something once, when I was young and he hired our first house manager. He said that one of the most important things our money could buy was time. It took me a while to understand what he meant, but I do now. If you’re working on a critical project, you don’t want to have to stop to cook or clean. Going shopping takes precious minutes that could be spent elsewhere. If you use your money to hire people for those tasks, that frees you up to do what you need. You can focus in order to power through, or you can relax and recuperate before your next big thing.”

“Somehow hiring a staff sounds like its own headache,” he laughed.

I shook my head. “A house manager can help there too. They’re in charge of the staff. A good one can handle everything from start to finish. Or you can be involved at whatever level you want.”

“Hmmm… Maybe I’ll give the whole thing a test drive to see if I like it.”

“How do you plan to test drive having a staff?”

He laughed. “Well… that vacation rental place had contracts with companies that could provide house staff while visiting. Maybe I’ll book a vacation with all the extras. See how I like life with a staff, and also decide if I like being in Harris Cove.”

“Might be a good idea.”

“Maybe you should reserve a place for a week or two. It’s about time you took a real vacation, not just head home to visit family.”

“Vacations are no fun alone.”

“That wouldn’t be an issue if you made some time to find and date an omega. Heck, you’ve got the tall dark and handsome thing going on. If I was an omega I’d totally jump your bones.” He leaned closer and batted his eyes at me. “Or I could always join you on a trip.”

I play-shoved him away. “I see you almost every day. How would going anywhere with you be a vacation?”

“It wouldn’t be for work. We could go somewhere, check out the sights…”

“You mean check out the local omegas.”

“As I said, check out the sights.”

“You’re such an alphawhore.”

“Not true. I look, but rarely touch. I think the term alphawhore only applies if you’re knotting at least one different omega every week. Now don’t get me wrong, I love flirting with handsome men, but I want to feel like there’s at least a decent possibility of more before taking him to bed.”

I smiled. As much grief as I gave my friend, he was a good person at heart.

“Wanna go get drinks?” he asked as we left my office.

I shook my head. “I’m beat. I think I’m gonna head home, spend some time with Tiny, see what my chef has prepared, eat, and collapse.”

“Rain check then?”

“Sure.”

He clapped me on the shoulder. “See ya tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose as Jordan peeled away to his office and I continued towards the elevators. My eyes hurt. Maybe I really did need to leave the code to the people we hired for that.

Still, it already felt like I was farther from the product than I’d like to be.
