Chapter 8 - Wes

 My omega rejected me.

I collapsed back into the chair and tried to catch my breath as Cody ran off.

An awkward quiet filled the office as hurt coursed through me.

Donna was the first to break the silence. “Was that reaction what I thought it was?”

I nodded, numb from the pain of rejection.

“Shit!” she replied, grabbing a phone off her desk. There was a moment of silence, then, “Hey, Theo? This is Donna. Is there any way you can drop everything and come over here?”

 Another moment of silence.

“No, it’s Cody.” She let out a long sigh. “We had a meeting this morning, and when he walked in… well… there’s no good way to say it. I think he ran into his fated mate here in my office, and he bolted.”

She stood, walked to a window, and peeked through the blinds. “He’s still in the parking lot, in his car.”

 Another pause.

“Thanks Theo. Do what you think is best for him, even if it means taking him home.”

She hung up the phone and sank into her chair.

I finally processed the side of the phone conversation that I’d heard. Cody—my omega—was still in the parking lot. I started to stand.

I needed to go to him; to ask him what I’d done wrong.

 “Stop,” Donna commanded.

I turned to her and growled. How dare she try to keep me from my mate?

She sighed. “Look, alpha-to-alpha, I get it. But you can’t go to him right now. It’ll only make things worse.”

“How can you say that?” I demanded, still mid-stand.

 “Sit,” she ordered.

I glared, but returned to sitting. “Who did you call?” I snarled. “His lover?”

She chuckled. “No. His best friend, Theo. He’s another omega, and one of the few people I’ve ever seen Cody trust.”

“It should be me out there,” I argued.

“Normally I’d agree, but I’ve known Cody for several years now. Going out there now would only make it worse. He ran because he needed space. If you violate it before he’s ready, then it’ll be harder for him to accept you.”

 “Accept me? We’re fated!”

“And that’s part of the problem. Cody hates the thought of having a fated mate. I don’t know why, but what just happened was his worst nightmare come true.”

I deflated. Was he really so against it?

She stood, rounded her desk and perched on the edge near me. Her pose was casual, but I could tell by the way she held herself that she was prepared to stop me if I tried to go to Cody.

I wrestled with myself. My alpha side demanded that I chase my omega, but I didn’t want to frighten him off either.

The sound of a car door came from outside, and Donna seemed to relax slightly. She stood and returned to the window before breathing a sigh of relief. “Theo’s here.”
