“You think they don’t trust the other guy?”

Dom shook his head. “No. They don’t, and that’ll eventually lead to sick animals not getting the care they need. It’s like the boy who cried wolf. If the vet keeps saying that there’s something wrong when a rancher knows there’s not just to bulk up the bill, then they’re gonna be cautious when there is a problem because they don’t want the hassle of it happening again.”

I nodded. “It makes sense. So you’re going to open your own vet practice?”

He smiled, and it lit up his face. “I am. Mobile to start since facilities that can handle livestock are expensive to set up. But once I’m established I plan to open a large animal hospital.”

“What will you do until then if an animal needs to be hospitalized?”

He grimaced. “I’m still trying to figure that out. But it’s a pretty dire situation if a large animal needs to be hospitalized. Most of my charges would be treated on site.”

“I think I get it…”

He smiled again. “And what do you do?”

I gave him a timid smile. “Nothing exciting. I’m a receptionist for a local law firm.”

He hummed. “It might not be exciting, but it’s an important job.”

I blinked. I’d had several alphas treat my job like it was something to be embarrassed about. “It is?”

He laughed. “Of course it is! How efficiently would your office function without you? Let’s not even think about the lawyers themselves. How much work would the paralegals get done if they had to answer the phone every few minutes? Who’d handle deliveries, or greet clients? You might not be handling the legal work, but you’re creating a client experience while freeing up time for others to do the work they need to do.”

I blushed. It was the first time anybody had ever looked at my job like that, at least around me. “You’re just saying that…”

He shook his head. “No. Not at all. Even without an office, one of the first positions I’m going to have to fill will be a virtual receptionist. Vet tech first, then somebody who can be my front line when I’m busy delivering calves or am otherwise in a position where I can’t rush to the phone. I’ll probably have to get somebody who can handle records and do light bookkeeping, since I can’t afford to hire multiple positions. But being that first point of contact will be a major part of the job.”

I smiled. It was obviously more than just words from him. He meant what he was saying.

He grinned. “There it is.”

“Hmm? There what is?”

“That dazzling smile. It looks good on you.”

My cheeks burned with the intensity of my blush, which made him chuckle.

Conversation slowed as the salad arrived, but Dom kept touching me or making me blush at every opportunity. By the time we finished dessert I had to keep myself from squirming with desire.

Never had I gone so fast from ‘nice to meet you’ to wanting a baby fucked into me. Everything in me wanted to take Dom’s knot and to see myself grow round with his seed.

“You’re quiet,” he said softly as he walked me to my car.

“Just happy,” I replied, my mouth getting ahead of me again.

He chuckled. “I take it that means that if I ask for your number, you’ll give it to me? Or should I just ask for a second date now?”

I gaped at him, even as giddiness filled me. This gorgeous man wanted another date? “Both?” I offered.

He grinned and handed over his phone. “Do you like spooky stuff?” he asked as I input my number.

I shrugged and handed back the phone. “As much as the next person. Why?”

“We’re doing a soft opening for the haunted maze on Thursday evening. Since I’m day shift I’ll have the evening off. Wanna go through it with me?”

Go through something spooky alongside him and be able to jump into his arms if I got startled? Sign me up. “Sounds like fun.”

He smiled, and I realized we’d stopped beside my car.
