Brian disappeared inside for a moment, then reappeared with a couple bowls. “For when they get back,” he explained before heading off to tend to the meat.

Soon the guests started to arrive, many bearing dishes for the party. Kids were sent out to join Madison and Robert while the adults gathered on the porch.

“You doing ok?” Dom asked as he took a seat next to me.

 I smiled. “Yeah.”

 “Good. Baby behaving?”

I chuckled. “He seems to have settled down now.”

 “You’re thinking boy today?”

I shrugged. “For now. You know it feels different every day.”

“I still can’t believe you didn’t want to know,” Tyler said.

Lee elbowed him in the stomach. “Just because you have to know doesn’t mean that he does.”

 Tyler laughed. “Ok, omega-mine.”

We looked up at a commotion and saw the kids coming back, Robert carrying a large basket of flowers.

Soon we were all sitting around, preparing the male flowers according to Annabel’s instructions. It wasn’t how I expected to spend part of my baby shower, but somehow it felt perfect. My baby would be a part of this large family, and it was exactly the kind of loving atmosphere they deserved.

By the end of the evening I was stuffed, had more than enough supplies for a full nursery, including a gag-gift from Tyler: a child leash, his way of reminding me how Dom and I met. I’d even been sent home with leftovers to last for days, including plenty of the sauteed pumpkin flowers.

This was my life now, and I loved it.

 Chapter 8 - Dom

“What did you get into?” I asked the horse as I examined a scrape on its side.

The mare moved in a way that told me she was uncomfortable with the wound, and I took a moment to calm her down.

“She was tryin’ to get to the food,” replied the rancher who had called me out. “We’d found out that she was able to squeeze through the gate, so we fixed it up. I think she tried again and got stuck, then tore herself up as she struggled to get free.”

I shook my head. “I take it you reused the old post?”

He nodded. “I did. We’re gonna pull it out though and replace it with a metal one so she can’t scrape herself if she tries it again.”

“Good call.” I patted the horse’s flank and smiled as she allowed me to examine the wound. It looked worse than it was, and I knew a good cleaning and maybe some ointment should do the job.

I motioned for my vet tech to come over and started showing him what we needed to do, when my phone rang. I pulled it out of my pocket and smiled when I saw Scott’s photo on the screen.

 “Hey,” I answered. “What’s up?”

I frowned when I heard my sweet mate panting.

 “Scott? Are you ok?”

“Sorry,” he replied a few seconds later. “Contraction hit right as you answered.”

“Contraction?” I asked. “Do you mean?”

He chuckled into the phone. “Yeah. I called the nurse line and they think I’m still a few hours out, but I’m hoping you can come home.”

“I’m almost done with my last appointment, then will be on my way. Ok?”
