Chapter 1 - David
“Papa?”
I smiled and turned as my daughter, Samantha, walked into the room, a box held casually under one arm. “Yes sweetheart?”
She smiled at me. “I just didn’t know where you were. I thought you were out in the moving truck.”
I shook my head. “I needed one last look.”
She set the box down, strode over and draped an arm across my shoulders. “It’s a lot of memories.”
I sniffled and nodded. “Yeah.”
She leaned her head against me, her brown hair, the same shade as my own, tumbling down my chest. “They’re good memories though.”
I wiped away a tear. “Yeah, they are.”
“I can’t believe you’re moving.”
“I know, but it’s time for a fresh start.”
“But Harris Cove? You’ll be clear across the country. Why not come with us instead? You can stay in the guest room until you find a place.”
“Oh hun, you don’t need your old papa cramping your lifestyle, especially since Eddie is pregnant. This is supposed to be a special time for you and your mate. Besides, I can always get on a plane to come visit.”
“You’re not old,” she scolded. “You’re barely even gray, just a bit in the beard. Hell, I bet the first time you go to the beach you’ll have alphas falling all over you. Lord knows they could do worse than a handsome and fit man in his forties.”
“They want young omegas who can give them babies. I’m too old for that.” I chuckled. “Besides, the only alpha I need in my life is you.”
She sighed. “But I’ll be here, and you’ll be there. I worry about you being lonely.”
“I know, but I bet in a few weeks I’ll be so busy I won’t have time to be lonely.”
“You sure? It won’t be a restaurant kitchen.”
I chuckled. “Positive. I might not be busting ass behind the line any longer, but a private chef stays plenty busy. I’ll have to plan menus, do the shopping, cook, and maybe do all that for multiple families, depending on what the agency out there needs.”
She hugged me tight. “I’m going to miss you, you know. You’ve always been here for me.”
I hugged her back. “I’m still here for you Sam. I’ll just be there. It’s ok though. You don’t need me to kiss a skinned knee anymore. You need an adult who will always listen and love you unconditionally.”
“You can kiss your grandbaby’s knees.”
I smiled. “Nice try, but I want to do this.”
She nodded into my shoulder and sniffled. “If you decide that you hate living on the west coast, then let us know. That guest room is open whenever you need it.”
I looked up and patted the side of her face. “I’m proud of you Sam. You’ve got a great job, and a handsome and loving mate. Your first baby will be here before you know it, and you’ll be too busy to worry about your papa all the time.”
“Can’t help it,” she sighed. “It was always just you and me. But now it’s just going to be you.”
“You’re wrong baby girl. It’s you, me, Eddie, and all the kids you’ll have. Heck I’ll probably still be kicking around to meet great grandkids. Distance doesn’t matter, emotions do. I love you and always will. I love Eddie like the son I never had. I can’t wait to be the cool grandpapa who swoops in with presents and spoils the kids rotten. It’s just time for me to chase a new dream.”
She forced a sad smile. “You’re making me feel guilty now.”
“Don’t. You’re allowed to be selfish with your heart. Things are going to change, and that’s hard on you. But you’re a strong woman, and I know that soon enough we’ll treasure time together even more.”
She nodded. “I guess you’re right.”
