“Both!” David cried. “I’d appreciate it if you’d give me the go-ahead to push!”

“I’m here, and while I don’t have a catcher’s mitt on, I’m ready whenever you are. You can push with the next one.”

“Thank God,” David gritted out, head falling back on the pillow.

I took a moment to dab away some of his sweat with my handkerchief. Even in pain, red and sweaty, he was still the most beautiful man I’d ever seen.

Then he cried out again, and tensed as he bore down.

I wanted to cry for him, to take away his pain.

“Ok, take a break. The next one should do it,” the doctor said.

David fell back to the pillows, panting.

“I love you,” I murmured.

He gave me a weak smile. “I love you too.”

“You’re not going to yell about knots and touching you?” I asked.

He chuckled. “I’m not going to complain about our miracle baby, at least not much.”

I smiled, even as he squeezed my hand again for the next contraction.

David let out a sob of relief at the same time a tiny, angry, voice made clear its displeasure.

“Well this one’s certainly got a lot to say,” the doctor joked. “Do you want to meet him papa, or should I put him in timeout for yelling?”

David smiled and held out his hands. “I’ll take him.”

The doctor grinned. “Nobody ever takes the timeout option.” He then passed our baby to a nurse, who brought him over and set him on David’s chest.

Our son settled, tiny fists on David like he was clinging to his papa, and my heart felt full to bursting.

My mate, and our son. It was the best thing I’d ever seen.

I smiled, then David’s eyes met mine.

“Why are you crying, alpha-mine?” he asked.

I laughed, and wiped away a tear I didn’t know was there. “I’m so happy.”

He looked at our son again. “Me too.”

“What’s his name?” the nurse asked, tablet in hand.

“James,” David said softly. “James Clarence Besichel.”

I started crying again. While we’d agreed on the first name, David had said that he already had the middle name picked out, but it was a surprise and to trust him.

He looked at me. “That’s ok, right?”

I nodded. “It’s perfect.”

Deep down, I knew that Clarence would approve too.
