Chapter 14 - Alan

As much as I wanted to take David—my pregnant mate and fiance—right to bed and make love to him until we both passed out, I didn’t have that luxury.

I’d ducked press interviews and sent countless ‘no comment’ statements since my departure from Beischel Equity, mostly out of respect for my nephew. But doing so now would do more harm than good. The truth was out, somehow, and I had to address it.

I skimmed the press release and nodded. It was factual, but struck a sympathetic tone. Both Robert and I had been grieving after the loss of my brother, and I’d decided to remain silent in the face of all the lies for his sake.

In a way, I was still protecting Robert, and maybe I always would. He was my nephew after all. However, I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, protect him from his own bad business decisions. Those would catch up to him soon enough. But I could do this one last thing: address the leak in a way that gave him an out in terms of how he treated me.

An experienced businessman would recognize the opening for what it was: a chance to save face publicly. Unfortunately, I doubted that he’d use it. At some point he’d decided that he always had to be right, and accepting my forgiveness would mean that he’d have to admit that he’d been wrong.

I would always love my nephew, but I also needed to wash my hands of him. I couldn’t let myself be caught up in his messes, after all now I had a mate and a child on the way.

I needed to leave a legacy for my own family, apart from Robert’s doings.

Beischel Equity was in the past, and it was Clarence’s legacy. The Beischel Business Incubator was my future, and it was what I would leave to my own child.

Antonio arrived, and after being briefed about the situation he immediately went to work, fielding calls and scheduling media interviews.

“I’m sorry,” I said to David, holding him close as both Victor and Antonio scurried back and forth with questions that needed answered. “We should be taking this time for us.”

David shook his head and leaned against me. “It can’t be helped. The timing isn’t ideal, but this is the chance for you to set the record straight.”

I nuzzled his hair. “Still, we should be celebrating privately, not fielding questions coming in over the phone and through email.”

David glanced up and smiled at me, running his fingers along my jaw. “I’m here, and I’ll still be here when the dust settles. If I’ve learned nothing else since I started working for you, it’s that you’re a busy man.” He paused and chuckled. “You do need a chef after all.”

I laughed and kissed him. “Now I know why I was alone for so long, it was so that I was available when you came into my life.”

He smiled at me. “I do have a request though.”

“What’s that omega-mine?”

He let out a soft noise of pleasure at the endearment. “When possible, take me with you if you have to leave town. I missed you.”

“You know I’ll probably have to leave for New York tomorrow or the next day, unless reporters are interested in remote interviews.”

“Give Victor a take-out budget?”

I burst into laughter. “I’ll take you with me if I have to go.”

David put on a serious expression. “I guess there is one more thing we should discuss.”

I frowned. “What is it?”

He grinned. “My eventual resignation. It makes no sense to pay me to be on staff once we’re married.” He winked. “I’ll still cook for you though.”

“I could fire you if it makes you feel better,” I teased.

“And have a firing on my resume? No way!”

I laughed and tightened my arms around him. I loved my omega, and I would spend every day for the rest of my life proving that to him.

~4 Months Later~

There was a knock at the door. I turned to see Victor standing there.
