Chapter 13 - David

Iclasped my hands between my knees and twiddled my thumbs.

Was it the wrong time to tell Alan that I was pregnant? He was already dealing with the continued fallout of what his nephew had done. On top of that, we’d never discussed children, and I had no idea if he wanted to be a father.

But he’d also made it clear that he wanted to talk to me. Would I—could I—hide the truth for even a few days?

No. I needed my alpha, particularly now. I had no delusions of a perfect future with my mate and our baby. I was forty-five years old, which made my pregnancy high-risk by default. Alan would be seventy by the time our baby started college. We were both otherwise healthy, but I couldn’t take anything for granted.

I touched my stomach. I was terrified, but I also wanted this baby. I’d had more than a day to think about it, and I saw it for the miracle it was. Regardless of how Alan reacted, I was going to give my child the best life possible.

I looked up at the sound of footsteps, and noticed the tired lines on Alan’s face. But he grinned as soon as he saw me.

“What’s the word?” I asked as he took a seat beside me and pulled me onto his lap.

He sighed. “I haven’t looked over everything yet, but Victor says that it’s the truth. My dated resignation letter was stored on the company server for some reason, and there were meeting transcripts from when I told the board. There were also leaks of agreements signed before Clarence passed, that prove that Robert lied about my not having authority to make certain promises. Unless there’s something else waiting, it looks like all the lies about me are about to collapse.”

 “Why now?”

He ran his hand up and down my back. “My guess is that he pissed somebody else off. I didn’t want to rock the boat when I left, but somebody must have decided that it was time to set the record straight.”

“I’m happy for you,” I murmured, tracing my fingers along the lines of his shirt.

He hummed, then tightened his grip around my middle. “What did you want to talk about, omega-mine?”

I shivered. I loved hearing him refer to me as his omega. But would he still think like that in a few minutes?

 “David?” he prompted.

I took a deep breath, squeezed my eyes closed to gather my courage, then opened them again and met his gaze. “Alan… I’m pregnant.”

Time stopped as I waited for him to respond.

 “Pregnant?” he whispered.

I licked my lips and nodded. “I took a test yesterday.”

 “Pregnant.”

 “Yes.”

A slow smile spread across his face, and one hand dropped to rest on my stomach. “You’re really pregnant?”

I nodded again, and tangled my fingers with his across where I would swell with his baby. “I am.”

A tear fell from one of his eyes as he used his free arm to hug me tight against his chest. “I’m going to be a father?”

“You are,” I sniffled, starting to cry with relief.

 “How?” he asked. “I thought…”

“So did I,” I admitted. “It hadn’t yet been a year, but I thought my fertile years were over.”

“Our miracle baby,” he murmured, rubbing my stomach lightly.

“You’re ok with this?” I asked.

He laughed. “Ok with it? David, do you know what a gift those words were? I’ve desperately missed my family since Clarence and Virginia died, but you just told me that I’m about to have a new family of my own. I’m not just ok with it. I’m thrilled! I can’t wait to watch you grow round, and to see our baby.”
